Net neutrality the day after

There has been much discussion about the global concerns on free internet today after the US FCC vote yesterday. The US which formulated the internet has championed this cause for many years,

It's a shame to drop a leadership role and cave in to economic and political pressures. Beginning with China, the leaders there have to be encouraged. Ever since the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989. a restrictive mentality has ensured the stifling of on line free expression.

From the get go the party apparatus has slowed down traffic. They have also given preference to idealistic content to further socialist causes.

Other sites have been outright blocked. This is especially true in Urumchi the capitol of Zinjiang he "autonomous region" of the far west. Necessary to keep the restive Uighur population under control.

In Europe there is expense which could favor the companies. in addition here is a mixed bag of socialism in some countries which can encourage control. In former British Commonwealth countries the greatest hope is offered for open internet!

India, a confirmed defender of open internet, instigated a high profile open internet service last year. The sentiment I. Why should India's vast poor be discriminated against in favor of the wealthy class getting faster more preferred service!

The good news for Wealthy Affiliate is very little effect of the US FCC move should influence the environment. Canada under Progressive minded President Justin Trudeau is a staunch supporter of net neutrality!

Michael, thanks for the info. -Jim Schupbach

I don't know much about the issue. I just know that ANYTHING the government gets involved in ends up in a muddle of red tape, reduced efficiency, we-the-sheeple end up suffering in the long run.

I don't know if you read my piece this morning regarding the FCC De-regulation of this topic, but I have tried to look at it without Politics involved. Although most people refuse to look at the actual under carriage of the deal itself. It was more than just the Government controlling a portion of the Internet, it would give them future control of it as a Utility. Most people say they are for it or against it only because of party affiliation....that is SAD. They either hate the GOP & President Trump or they hate the Democrats and Obama for putting in place back in 2015. Personally, it was UNNECESSARY to do anything. Most regulations are put in place for one reason, so the Government can control it.....FACT. I for one, prefer to find out for myself what is in or not in a regulation and then like it or not based on the facts, not politicization of it. Have a good One.

Funny, I posted a question on Net Neutrality a few months ago and I got shot down pronto here by someone informing me it is not allowed due to being a politcal topic...so I am trying to lie low here on this one...(a bit anyway)...since it appears it is OK now to discuss in the open. But I agree with you, people should actually read what is in regulations before they decide based on political party...although those of us who follow politics are well aware that many of the politicians themselves don't bother to read what's in bills or regulations either before they get out and speak, push or vote for them.

That said, each political party has it's basic underlying philosophy...and we all know what they are.

My two cents...as I always say...Which, in the big scheme of things, isn't worth two cents!

Hi Mike,

I was concerned since I educated myself with this, that we are doomed. It wasn't until I saw Kenny's post that it was noted how WA hosts on Amazon's massive servers so we should be ok.

Do you know if WA has always been with Amazon, or if this is more recent?

I'm not sure Patsy. Amazon is a leader so it makes since for WA to latch on!

Not sure!

I was going to make a comment about the moves necessary to create a totalitarian government, but there are rules here about making a political post and I thought better of it.
We will just have to wait and see how the big companies that control the internet decide to maximize their profit. Hope WA is large enough to cut some good deals for us.

Not sure how this discussion will go, but I had long debates about it yesterday. Just so everyone knows (in case ppl are unsure) the vote revolved around what are called bright-line rules. These rules, which were repealed yesterday... as defined by the FCC, are as follows:

No Blocking: ISPs cannot block legal content, applications, or services.
No Throttling: ISPs cannot slow down or degrade internet service based on the content, application, or service accessed by users.
No Paid Prioritization: ISPs cannot accept payment to give content, applications, or services more favorable access to users.

Of most concern is number 3, which prevented ISP's from accepting money from big business to slow down or block those who do not pay.

Hopefully that helps if someone is unsure of what yesterday was all about.

Sad day
