Hope for net Neutrality

The news is full of the pending Dec 14 decision on US Net neutrality. This involves a request by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to replace existing rules.

Many have a "gloom and doom" outlook on the death of a free internet. But there are 3 major factors involved which give hope.

  1. The availability of a free internet without a native charge is considered an inalienable right by most of the voters.
  2. It sets a precedent that runs against the grain of opposition to big government interference.
  3. And of major consideration the courts which are set up to arbitrate and dispense fair public opinion will ensure through the legal process there will be sufficient delay in decision making that no party will be left in the cold in the important representation involved.

One of the first concerns is what will be the process for inevitable appellate courts in the ensuing discourse. The process will take place by lottery to ensure fairness as there is jurisdiction favor involved. Basically conservative vs progressive regions.

The estimate is at least 1 and 1/2 years minimum for the unfolding of the process. I don't believe I am in violation to proclaim that I am absolutely opposed to the loss of our free internet, The world runs on it, Wealthy Affiliate runs on it and we all depend on it for the efficient administration of our business!

Hi! Mike, Again, thank you for voicing the potential change in operating the Internet, which was way above my head. But, I read through all the answers and discussion from the WA members, which have made me aware of what the concerns are about.

Again, I do appreciate the information along the living inside WA community.

Best,

James

Nothing stays the same, that's a given, but this will impact everyone and I share your concerns Mike.

What about the non-voters?
Why is it net neutrality is needed in the delay of court arbitration decisions, will it not help facilitate fast?

This biggest thing my husband says will affect us, besides the cost, is that the internet provider will be able to dictate what search engines we use. In the business we are in, we rely in being able to access all the search engines to see where our sites rank on them.

For example, the company that owns our cable company owns Yahoo, or at least has a lot of stock in Yahoo. We would be forced to use Yahoo unless we pay to use something else. Certainly you all see where that would be a problem in the business we are in.

It could also work out to where we would have to pay the companies that own the search engines to be allowed to even rank on them in the first place! So much for SEO! It will come down to who has the most money, not who has the best information or "readability!"

I like that the internet is neutral. I like that I have the same opportunity to rank as everyone else does if I learn the know how. I like that I can decide which search engine I want to use. I vote to keep the internet neutral!

I've been trying to get the word out on this as well. Most articles and comments revolve around the "service" side, and ISP's offering bundles similar to cable networks.

However, there is far more at stake here. In addition to the potential political and power/control consequences... it's not just about charging someone extra money for access to the web.

This also leaves the door open for ISP's to charge companies and individuals (us) for the service of being on the web. For example...Papa John's Pizza, who could afford to pay ISPs ten's or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, could in theory be given preferential service over a local pizza place who could never afford it.

Could it ever get to that point? At one time I'd say no, but the world is changing quickly and when it comes to money and power...

I apologize... I know Wealthy Affiliate is not the place for this discussion... I just wanted to share my voice and echo your sentiments to spread awareness. This is critical for those of us earning all or a portion of our income online (as well as for those who are working towards that goal).

I think it should be fine to discuss here. It's more than just a political discussion; it could directly impact our business.

That's absolutely right Craig. I weigh those things in before posting!

Yes and I believe that people need to speak up and raise awareness about it. There is a huge nationwide protest to save net neutrality on December 7th.

Thank you MKearns, great post my friend. Hope the majority hear understand the consequences gong forward if this passes.

Keep government out of it, they always messes things up. We need more business people in government.

Capitalism is good, imho!

By the way Merry Christmas my friend!
