Wish There Was A Way
I wish there was a way to channel all my energy into one direction. I know many of you probably experience the same thing and I'd really like to know if anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with this in a successful way.
How many times a day do you sit at your computer, working on a particular task and all of a sudden you realize that you're thinking about something other than what you're working on. That's not to say that I don't complete the task in front of me, but sometimes I feel like my mind is running at such a high speed, if only I could control it, I could get things done faster and probably produce better work. As I'm working, I look out the window, I see something on the screen, or even a word sparks a new idea or concept, an off and running goes the mind, "if I were to do this, or maybe I can do that, or how about if" it doesn't stop. Granted, I wear a number of hats daily, not unlike most, but I can be here working on my niche, but as I'm writing text, my mind goes off applying what I may be drafting to another project I have, or how this idea could work for one of the organizations I'm involved in and it keeps ballooning into more and more and by the time I'm finished, I can't even remember where it started.
I remember as a child, in the days before technology and blogs, a favorite expression was if you could put all that energy into a bottle and sell it "we'd all be rich". I guess what I'm in need of is a suggestion on how to exhibit some internal control. I like the fact that I am constantly trying to be creative and conceptualizing new ideas, but I'd like to complete one thing before I move on to the next. Part of this is probably spending much time alone. Sitting in my office most of the day, the only interaction I experience is with Eddie, my little white Havanese Dog,
If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, I'd really like to hear. Fighting this all day long is beginning to become tiresome and distracting. I tried to count how many times it's happened since I've been writing this, and I got so distracted, I actually lost count. Help !

Hi Mitch,
I don't know what I can tell you, except what works for me. If I know I need to get a group of certain things done, I will make a list and check things off as I finish them. Granted, I may get distracted. Or something happens and my list goes out the window. But in general, I'm able to focus better with a plan in place before hand.
Besides, it feels really good to be able to check things off a list even if they are little (ie,fold the laundry, empty the dishwasher, or make a vet appt for next week) check check and check. Good Luck.
Thanks, I do the list too, and luckily it's usually done by the end, but it doesn't help me to focus in on something, it just reminds me what else I still need to do. Appreciate the thought.
It can be really difficult to maintain concentration, When I started Freelance writing I found myself becoming distracted all too easily and what helped me was to make myself deal with the task in front of me for just 10 minutes and then have a break. I would keep a notepad beside me to then jot down any fresh ideas that came to me and then back to the task in hand. I found that by telling myself 'just 10 minutes' I found it easier than thinking I had to stick at it for an hour or so. Hope that helps a little :)

You're not alone but what I am doing if my mind is to full of stuff to think, that sometimes I am feeling it will explode, I am getting off my computer, go outside and take a deep breath, then suddenly, a new , ideas will spring up, I am putting them on the "NOTES" of my cell, focus on what you're doing, finish it and go back to the notes and go over what's nice to do next.
