What's Really Important in Life
Today I would like to talk about what's really important in life!!! This topic is an interesting one for myself and one that I feel took me years to figure out!!!
A little history....I had my first child as a young adult!!! My first child lived through the last bit of undergrad school and went on to assist me in medical school lol!!! My first two years of medical school, I spent her after school hours teaching her my lessons of anatomy and physiology and microbiology lol!!! (I learn through teaching others!) We sort of made a game out of it!!! When she was in kindergarten she knew all of the bones in the body!!!
Had child 2 towards the end of medical school!!! I spent my last year traveling across the US doing different internships and her awesome father (my husband) was basically a single parent.
After medical school came residency...I just thought that the prior was bad...My little family whom had moved with me to Houston for my residency soon realized that it was pointless to be there (because I never was) and moved back home.
Then came my first real paying job as a doctor...should be a breeze now right!!! Decided to go for a boy and shortly thereafter child number 3 came (a boy!!!!)! I figured that I was working now and I could really enjoy the pregnancy and the newborn stages which I had missed so much of before....WRONG!!!!
I spent my days and weeks trying to grasp the learning curve of running a practice and gain patients!!!!
Well....fast forward 10 years and I decided finally to close up shop...yep...walk away from my practice!!! Don't get me wrong....I LOVE my profession, BUT....I love my family more!!!! I now had my oldest whom was married with my first grandchild and my middle (8th grade) and my youngest (3rd grade)!!!! I just HAD to stop this cycle I had been in and enjoy MY FAMILY!!!!
There has not been one day go by in the almost 6 months that I have been out of practice. Sure...I do miss helping my wonderful patients, BUT....my kiddos actually smile when they see me at school waiting to pick them up!!! My oldest has actually said that she is jealous of the younger two but also so happy that her son gets to know me and that I am a large part of his life!
Moral of the story....life is shorter than you think!!! I'm not saying quite your job...but...make sure you are in a career that doesn't consume every waking moment of your day!!! Your kiddos won't remember that you worked so hard to give them a good life, but they WILL remember when you were there for them versus the times you were not!!!

You are very brave to have left your profession but you are right. Your younger ones probably are benefiting from having you around more. I can see how your oldest could be jealous. She missed out on so much important mommy time. But you are there now so enjoy yourself.
