How To Find Balance

Work, home, health, family, friends, vacation, sleep! How to fit this all into a 24 hour day!?! It's amazing how quickly time flies when trying to find this balance. When trying to walk that delicate time sensitive tightrope. Days become weeks, weeks become months, and next thing you know it's 4 months until the end of the year! What can help keep us sane?

Write it down. Make a chart, graph, calendar, alerts, reminders, whatever you need if not, all of them! Old fashion planner, electronic device, or both! Tedious but fun, flexible but track-able. Knowing where my time was spent, doing what, for approximately how long, helps to understand why "time flies". The trickier part is considering the things that come up and "unaccounted for"....last minute requests, extended phone calls, the complexity of a task changing, traffic, etc. Write it down! Seeing the full schedule for the week (or day) and setting reminders of important events will help find balance between work and play.

Set a timer. Keep track of when it's time to stop working on a task and move on to the next project. Once the bell rings, assess what was completed, what is needed to finish, then determine how to spend your next "timed" session. The object is not to rush through your project or feel pressured but, rather to stay focused for a pre-determined set amount of time. Finding the balance of limiting distractions is a task in itself! However, if we know we are on a time allotment we may view the task in a more concentrated light.

Schedule relaxation time. As funny as it may sound to schedule your relaxation time, it's necessary! You scheduled everything else, so schedule in #1! That's where the balance come in. That's where the chaos come to a complete halt. Play a game, work on a hobby, cook, practice yoga, walk the dog, garden, clean (some say it's fun) but find fun ways to relieve stress. Create peaceful moments in the day in which a "no stress zone" sign is up. Not saying to ditch the timer completely here but, you can set it a little longer if necessary :-)

Finding balance can be a challenge but, only if you let it be. Make time work for you.
