Where to use h1 html code

First of all let me make it clear, I'm no expert on SEO but where I can I like to offer advice of what I do know.
As I review many of the web sites here on WA I notice that dozens of the sites use the <h1> code more than the recommended one per page, some sites I've seen it used up to six times.

Let me explain. The search engines are our life line and we need to do every thing possible to help them find their way around our sites.

The <h1> code is normally our main title of the article we have written, it's purpose is to tell the search engines what our site is about and where it starts. Sub headings normally use h2 or h3 or h4 they convey the importance of the headings to the search engines.

Several members are using the name of the site as a h1 heading and are using the same heading on every page, this will be seen by Google and others as duplicate copy, it won't help you and may even get you knock back.

When I do my research online, I'm never satisfied with one person answer, I would normally check it out three or four times before I'm satisfied with the answer. So don't be afraid to check out what I'm saying.

Hi Matt I would still use your secondary title with

it helps with SEO. According to my system your front page has one H1 which is good

Hi Matt yes your main title has a H1 code as does your secondary title, which is normal to have a h2 code on it

Hi Mike, I removed the second h1. I also removed the title through WP and re-entered it and re-updated it. The error came back BUT I notice if I analyse that post directly e.g. the-healthy-canine/dog-migration-instinct there is no error. The error is displayed when I have posts set to be the home page. If I use my "About My Site" as a static home page there is no error either.
I am thinking it is a bug in the analyser (and maybe in combination with the theme) in that if posts are used for the home page it is not recognizing something and throwing the error. Thoughts? For now I am just going to leave it. I'm pretty sure that page has been ranked already because if I search a phrase from that page in quotes the post shows up in the SERP.

Hi again Mike. I added h1 with a description. I was able to set the font size and give it the same color as the title. It looks ok and Bing SEO analyser likes it. No more error. So if we are allowed one of these per page/post maybe I should go through and add the h1 to all of them?

Hi Matt
You have two

code on your front page the second title (In the wild dogs will migrate every day all day long) this one should be a

In the wild dogs will migrate every day all day long

that should fix the problem.

I would rather take it right out but then I'll get the SEO error again. It is weird that the analyser is not recognizing the h1/title. Can you see into the theme html to see if the h1 is there for the title?

Hi Mike, I just started using bing webmaster tools. It is telling me I am missing

for one of my posts. If I look at my html text I don't see h1 code anywhere on any other pages or posts. I can manually put in

page description

but it adds another title to my page in big bold fonts. I already have my page title showing. Not sure what to do to fix this. I have re-created the post and have gone as far as to delete my theme and reload it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Matt
The

is automatically the title on Wordpress themes the second title in the articles it's self would be a

code. First check that you have in fact got a title, which is above the article writing in editing.
Can you send me the article link you are promoting and I will check the code with my software.

Yes Mike, that's what I thought the actual title would be. Here is the link. You will see the

that I manually added right at the top.

Let me know if you need anything else. Much appreciated.

Hi Mike, that's a great point! I sort of knew that, but I tend to use h1's more often than I should. Thanks for your tip.

I always use bing webmaster tool because he analyse the SEO and tell if you do mistake :) Thank you for this post ^^

Hi Khaos I've never tried bing webmaster, I'll check that out. Thank you
