How Blue Diamonds and Gold Was Keeping Me Poor

Does this sound familiar? You needed blue Diamonds to craft tokens. You need tokens to get the horse that will help you get Penguin Island. Before you call the men in the white coats, some of you may recognize this as a game played on Facebook enjoyed all over the world by thousands! But these games are designed to make you spend money on Facebook "gold" because these time-limited quests will never be achieved otherwise.

I had to ask myself why am I spending time and money on this game that has me so hooked. I could be working on learning more about online marketing or setting up my website. But hours would go by playing the game. The makers of these games know a powerful secret: they know how people get hooked on these games. They know there is big money in the psychological way people use these games for fulfillment.

So I began to analyze what was the draw for me to this game. How can I use this to learn and create. The key components I discovered were: (1) Instant Gratification (2) Visual and Audio Stimulus (3) Rewards and (4) Support from others.

Knowing this now gave me powerful tools to use to become successful with Wealthy Affiliate. Taking each component, I began building what I needed to make these beginning days fun and exciting for me. There is a sense of fear and you become overwhelmed when you begin something new. I needed to conquer this fear. Using what I do in the game when I reach a new level or am unfamiliar with the scene is now helping me to press forward. The excitement is now outweighing the fear!

So what can each of these components do for you? Are you letting candy "crush" your dreams. Are you giving all your money to the farm? Whatever the game is if it is robbing you of valuable time and money, then turn that around and make becoming wealthy a fun venture! These games are fun and addictive. Making real money should be the same way. That's why sometimes it's hard to get started. It feels like work.

Using the components here is what I have come up with for me:

  1. Instant Gratification: In the game when I get finish with a scene I am instantly rewarded with a star and other trinkets that build to better items and unlocks more scenes. With WA I have decided after I complete a lesson in the 'Getting Started' section I will have the eat a piece of chocolate. I love chocolate so this is a very gratifying exercise for me!
  2. Visual and Audio Stimulus: Each scene in the game has hidden gems that produce exciting sounds when you find them. For WA I have come up with a way that I will get excited when money comes that I did not know was coming. I have an account set up that will call my phone when a deposit is made. My ringtone will play "That's The Way I Like It" when the transaction is made!
  3. Rewards: The games rewards artifacts and wonders from around the world. Though making money could be reward in and of itself, I decided to reward my self with a new car. This is what I set out to do as stated in my profile and it's why I am now spending my hours learning the business.
  4. Support from others: That's all of you! I saw that this was a great community of people from day one. We need each other and your support means the world to me. I know the days, weeks and months to come will prove to be a fun venture. Like my game I see us on quests that will be very gratifying, stimulating and will reap many rewards. To start out the quest I want to see 20 people respond to this blog. Tell me what your ringtone would be for your deposit. What reward are you striving for? Let's here it community!

I believe #4 Support from others or that sense of community is key here. That is what makes Facebook one of the top sites in the world. I have a site that's currently in the works that I am hoping to add a community element to eventually.
In the early days of the internet, Michael Dell said that businesses who master content, commerce and community would rule the internet.

Hi Michelle, I played some of those games, but gave up most as I refuse to pay for an advantage to win. Just a personal quirk, seems like cheating to me lol.
I do agree that you can learn a lot from games on how to market to people. As for my ringtone, "For the Love of Money" by the O' jays. A classic and is THE Money song for me. What is my reward. When get things running well, a 4 hour workweek. It can be done and was on my way to it when was last doing websites and marketing. Once I have that 4 hour workweek and the income I need , I'll be busier then ever, but working on projects that I want to use to help benefit others.
Best wishes on your endeavors.

They can be very addictive, I was hooked also but thank God I was able to be free.

You learned alot from the Facebook games. My nephew keeps asking why only one game on tablet and I said could not afford any more. He said but they all free. As they say no such thing as free I much rather pay $50 for game than be nicked and dime by free game.

I learned the hard way that free isn't free with these games!
