I am a big fan of Canva and create most of my blog graphics with it but there are some limitations that I have found. As of this writing, there isn't a way to erase the background of an image yet using Canva but there is with iPiccy. The following is an example of what I mean by removing or erasing the background of an image.
Now keep in mind, I didn't spend a lot of time working on removing the background so it isn't perfect. I'm just trying to illustrate what can be done with this free tool. After removing the background, you can export your image into the built-in Graphic Designer and then add text, add a new gradient background, and more.

Besides the erase tool there are over 100 photo effects and the ability to crop, edit, and resize your images like a pro without a huge learning curve. While not as easy to use as Canva, this program can be learned in minimal time as it is very intuitive. I may create tutorials in the future if anyone is interested.
