What's The Purpose Of Your Blog Post?

Every blog post has a purpose ... or at least it should have. Whether it is to share some information with readers, lead people to a product, encourage people to read other posts on your site etc.
I have been struggling a bit with this lately because my blog posts (probably like yours) were written originally to focus on ranking and SEO and not much else. Yes products were included but I wasn't really thinking about what the customer or reader was looking for beyond that.
And perhaps more importantly for now I hadn't really thought about those customers who didn't really know what they wanted!

However, having focused on writing ads for the last few weeks I now realise that I want some of these same posts to be focused differently, either on new conversions or leading readers to other products or pages.
Get Inside the Mind of Your Reader
The advantage of writing PPC ads is you are now controlling where the reader is coming from, you know exactly the type of search term they are using, you write an ad to match and then you need to make sure that your final landing page/post matches the ad and the search term.
You start to get more inside the mind of the reader. If I was clicking on this ad this is what I would expect when I arrive on the post ... and then I look at the post and have to decide whether this would meet the expectations of this search.
The same applies to SEO ranking generally, after all PPC ads are essentially just bought top SEO ranking places. So what was your reader thinking of when they typed in their search term and what would they be expecting when they click and land on your post?
The more you can link these two things together the greater the chance you have of retaining that reader and leading them onto your next post or product.
So do you have a clear purpose for every blog post you write?
