Congrats on going Premium! :)

Yeah, well I went Premium the first day I arrived here at WA ;) The content and the WA members have been very persuasive.

It took me a few days to go Premium... :) Yes, it's really a special place here!

Congratulations

Thank you kmotte. Let's start a new life full-throttle.

That's a good start. Welcome to WA! :)

Thank you Karax. I hope I can achieve some of my goals when doing my best! :)

Awesome, welcome. It sounds like your already a step up on the tech side. What led you to WA? Was there something specific you were looking for?

Yeah indeed! I'm a software developer for two decades now and I always looked for the right place to get started with an online business. Apparently I've found it after years of searching :) I don't have found a niche yet but I'm sure this will be only temporary.

What programming languages are you familiar with? There aren't a lot of coders in these parts.

I've been always in with Java. Some years C# as well. At the moment I'm enrolled in the Coursera course for Functional programming with Scala -> https://www.coursera.org/specializations/scala

I can really recommend it! One can do it for free as well.

Ah. So you're a pro then. :) I consider those the harder languages to work with. Less forgiving. I've done some work with Java and it's variant used for Android apps. Not really my style, but I have a lot of respect for the people that use it.

Most of my focus has been on PHP though, JavaScript as necessary, and Python for web scraping and what not. I'm actually looking at Go sometime in the next year for a project I want to take up. Apparently it's one of the fastest server languages for the kinds of things I need to do.

I won't take up any more of your time, since you obviously have a lot of training going on between here and Coursera, but if you ever want to talk shop or need help with anything let me know.

Thank you for the compliment! I would never see myself as a pro but yeah ... I've always been passionate when it came to programming stuff. The languages you named are exactly the ones I've a huge respect for. All this frontend languages, JavaScript frameworks and PHP as well ... If you mastered them all you must be a fantastic website engineer!

Thank you a lot for the insights and for the nice conversation. Sure, if I have any questions I'll come back to you. Same to you, if you want to talk about server side stuff just ask :)

OK that's actually kind of interesting. PHP is actually entirely server side. I've only used JS for frontend, but a lot of people swear by Node.js for server side. I also have better than average familiarity with Linux, but it's definitely not one of my specialties. I pretty much know just enough to figure out how to do whatever I need to do.

Like I said, I used the Android version of Java and come to think of it wrote a desktop program in Java. So when you say Java and C#, I picture desktop or mobile applications or something along that lines. Server side I picture what I listed above. So exactly what kind of stuff do you build, so that I know what to come pick your brain about later?

Hey Numerous.

Sorry if I might have mixed things up. For sure, PHP is a server side language but what I meant is that I've never been good in developing frontends for websites. JavaScript always confused me a bit. Same for Node.js ... I never gave it a try but the fact that a interpreted typeless language is now used for server side things scares me a bit ;) I'm more - let's say - the "server side backend guy". I don't develop mobile applications. I'm actually employed in a global company that provides technologies and services for a number of telecommunications companies (i.e. SMS routing technology, e.g. which route from A to B is stable on the one hand but cheap on the other?).

I hope I could shed some light on it.

Hey no worries. I've taken a couple of computer programming classes, but I'm almost entirely self taught, so I sometimes need clarify what we're talking about in terminology. "Typeless" language being a good example. I knew exactly what you meant when you said that, but I couldn't pull the term out of my brain earlier.

Typeless is what I meant when I was talking about Java and stuff being less forgiving. I tend to play things a little more fast and loose, so the typeless languages are a little more my speed. :) And yeah SMS routing and that kind of infrastructure type thing are definitely what I'd call the "pro" side of things.

Good to know. It will be interesting to see your take on things as you go. I'll let you get settled into it and we can talk more about how things are going, but if you run into any challenges don't hesitate to message me.

Congratulations
