Visualizing Your Future Self to Change What You Do Today

I recently heard Chase Hughes discuss an idea that caught my attention: instead of relying only on affirmations, goals, or words, create a visual relationship with your future self.

His point was that our future selves can feel abstract. We know intellectually that today's decisions affect who we become years from now, but that future person often doesn't feel very real. Hughes suggested using an age-progressed image of yourself to make that future version more concrete and emotionally meaningful.

That gave me an idea.

I used AI to create a realistic image of myself many years from now, older but still active, healthy, independent, and spending time with my adult daughter, Melissa Jeane.

The image affected me differently than simply saying:

"I want to live a long life."

or:

"I need to take better care of myself."

Those are good thoughts, but they're still words.

The image gives me someone to look at.

Future me.

And suddenly a choice I make today has a connection to a person I can actually visualize.

When I'm deciding what to eat, whether to exercise, whether to take care of myself, or whether to fall back into an unhealthy habit, the question becomes:

"Am I helping that future version of myself get here?"

I think this concept can apply to far more than health.

You could create an image representing:

• yourself running the business you are trying to build;
• yourself financially independent;
• yourself publishing the book you've been postponing;
• yourself traveling somewhere you've always wanted to visit;
• yourself enjoying retirement;
• yourself celebrating an important milestone with your family.

The purpose isn't to pretend that visualizing something will magically make it happen.

The visualization is simply a reminder of why today's behavior matters.

The future result may be years away, but today's decision is happening right now.

That's the part I find powerful.

Instead of asking only:

"What do I want?"

we can also ask:

"What would the person I want to become need me to do today?"

That turns the future self from an abstract idea into someone you have a relationship with—and perhaps someone you don't want to disappoint.
