How to get a great score ALSO on Google PageSpeed Insight
As long as I can't create any Training, I'm going to write here how I managed to get a great score (above 90%) not only on Pingdom and GTMetrix, but also with Google PageSpeed Insight!
The 2 main issues of my website were related with the rules "Eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content" and "Leverage browser caching".
Even though my website scored 98%-97% with GTMetrix, and was very well recognized also by the Pingdom SpeedTest tool, it also got 74% on the mobile check of Google PageSpeed Insight.
After a quick research on Google and in the Wordpress Plugins area, I could find a plugin, named Above The Fold Optimization (url: https://it.wordpress.org/plugins/above-the-fold-op...), which is aimed to solve the problems I've mentioned before.
The plugin itself is not very user-friendly, and it requires a bit of actions to be performed in order to have everything sorted out, but after a while of reading/understanding I was able to get a really good 92% score on the PageSpeed mobile score!
The plugin asks (and checks whether already done) to install another plugin, Google Webfont Optimizer (url: https://it.wordpress.org/plugins/google-webfont-op...), which in combination with another plugin, Autoptimize (url: https://it.wordpress.org/plugins/autoptimize/), allows to improve the way the fonts are served over our websites!
As I said it's not an install-and-forget plugin, it needs at least a bit of initial optimization, but it's not so difficult and in a couple of steps everything should be working properly and your websites would be able to score great also on the Google PageSpeed Insight tool.
Please let me know what you think about and don't be worried to ask for any issues!
Regards
Matteo

I was at 73 for mobile and 80 for desktop. After installing and setting up those three plugins I get 43 and 56. :( Any suggestions?
Thank you!

That is the issue with the quantity of plugins you are using as you see as soon as you installed that plugin it reduced it. You can decide to do away with the plugins that you are not using at the moment.
GT says my problem says I have Leverage Browser Caching problem (something to do with specifying expiration dates, how can I do this?) and I added the 3 plugins but no difference in speed. How to set the Above the fold optimizer?
I have the usual 4 the 3 mentioned above and also
Remove Query String from Static resources
Scripts-To-Footer
Ultimate Social Media Plus
WP Fastest Cache
WP Smush
I did the Plugin Profiler and my slowest plugin was the All in one SEO which was only 0.13sec so ....
it is not so much as how many plugins it is the load they may put on your site wondered if this would help you Is Your Website Slow?
Yes thanks. I have been through this already that is where most of the plugins come from. But my google speed check still only 79 for mobile and 88 for desktop. I wonder if it is my omega theme that is the problem... Anyone know? Thanks!
I do not get to hung up on google page speed I just test mine out on various devices and get others to check it as well as the results seem to vary from place to place if you know what i mean
I am trying not to either but trying different ways to up google ranking and apparently page speed is one variable so....
Hey Matteo,
I added the 3 plugins like you said but it made my PageSpeed got worse. It went from 64/100 down to 56/100. What next?
This is a great addition. I think a lot of users will find it challenging with the 3 plugins and whether to use 3 more plugins. But yes! A good solution. Thanks for sharing!
Well, I think you're right, even though I've got a number of plugins which is getting closer to 20 on my site (between 5 and 10 of them are aimed to improve the website's performance in several different ways)... And everything is pretty fast, as stated by pingdom, GTMetrix... And also pagespeed now :)
This is just to say that not all the plugins are bad, neither have to be slow... I don't care about the amount of them as long as my website is more "enjoyable" to be used (and, of course, speed counts!) ;)
Totally agreed! It's just the art of making sure they are compatible with each other. I now know who to call if I have a problem with my plugins! Thanks so much for sharing your informative know-how! :-)
You're welcome of course! Can I contact you in case of some plugins-related problem I'm not able to sort out by myself? ;)
