Hi Marty,

Are you talking about getting spam comments on your website or are you getting spam emails sent to your email inbox? I would suggest installing WP spam shield and uninstalling Akismet if you haven't done so already.

If you're getting lots of spam email you should consider using a contact form plugin that comes with a captcha. I find that "Contact Us Form" works really well and it comes with a captcha that people will need to fill out before sending you an email.

It really cuts down on the number of spam messages that I receive on a daily basis.

I hope this helps you out Marty and please let me know if you have any other questions or need my help.

Cheers
~Scott~

Hi Scott, good to hear from you again. You always have good answers to my questions.
I have installed WP SpamShield and Contact Us Forms. Hopefully these will filter out the hundreds of spam emails I've gotten.
Thanks again,
Marty

Hi Marty,

It's great to hear from you again as well. I'm glad that you find my answers really helpful and that you have installed these 2 plugins. This should cut down on the number of spam messages/emails you receive on a daily basis.

Let me know if you need anymore help or have any other questions for me.

Cheers
~Scott~

WP SpamShield is awesome. It's also what Kyle recommends to replace Akismet

So is Kyle now recommending not using Akismet (Uninstall?) in favor of WP Spam Shield? Or would you want both?

You wouldn't need both. Uninstall Akismet and install WP SpamShield.

HI, I use the AntiSpam Bee Plugin and it works really well.

Thanks so much for your reply. I will compare that to SpamShield.

Hey Marty, eventually you will get natural backlinks and shares from others. It's best not to force backlinks. If they are on a different niche then yours, I suggest you decline.

As @Kathy331 backlinks to sites with lots of traffic are good. Backlinks to sites with little traffic are bad. Use nofollow when linking to good sites with little traffic like many of the sites here at WA. Put "backlinks" in the question bar. There is lots of training. But is there training specific to when to use "nofollow"?

it depends on what is your motivation about no follow. But I guess you are here to network with other entrepreneurs; if so what is the need for nofollow?

Bill I'm not sure, but I too would like to see a training on using "nofollow".

I am also confused with this subject. I have read that Google frown on backlinks, but have also read that as long as they are quality links and related to your niche then its fine. So I am looking forward to the answers thanks for asking this question

Googles Penguin upgrade addressed the problem of link farms by looking at the quality of the site you backlink to. Quality as defined by Google is a secret, but the amount of traffic a site gets is important. So, your understanding is correct. Backlinks to authority sites like CNN or Facebook are good. Back links to low volume sites get your site downgraded.

hope this helps you out:

if other sites that link to you are from different niches than yours then it won't do any good to your site.

Quality backlinks to authoritative sites are good. :)

How do you block email to your website from a crank? I have someone who daily sends me long blogs that fill up my spam folder. I have asked repeatedly to be taken off their lis

Good question and tagged.

Others here have given good directions to get rid of these pests; thank you all! Never, ever respond to spammers on your site, on your phone, in your in-box ...just get rid of them.

You have some really good answers here. Hope they help and you manage to block the spammer.

If they don't give me the option of "unsubscribe" (even tho I never subscribed), I blacklist the email address and never hear from them again. To do this copy the email address, click at top on "options", then scroll down to "email filters" -- then "manage" -- then where it says "whitelist" take the second option "blacklist" and plug in their email address and "add". Done!

Maybe this can help you out.

If you're using a contact form on your site, depending on the form your using you can block this persons email from using the form.

If it's comments you can block things using the "Blacklist Option"

You can block specific email addresses from commenting on your blog. You can block email address domains, IP addresses and even keywords that might be used in spam or negative comments.

Look under Setting then Discussions, scroll to the bottom and you'll see the Comment Blacklist

Type in the email address. If you have more than one they must each be on a separate line.

Hope this helps

If they are going to your spam folder the plugin is doing it's job correctly. Just empty spam folder periodically.

Just mark as spam, they will go away. I had some of them. Do not contact, they like attention:)

Looks like Marion came to the rescue again. We are going to gave to get her a white horse. Ha-ha. Isn't she great.

You'll find most of what you need at ~Marion

Thanks Marion, this was helpful.

I use FileZilla to upload my files to the server and then use the page editor to create a link to the file on my webpage.

Thank you.

Marty, if it is a PDF, you have to upload the file to the server. There is info by searching in the search bar on top of the screen

John

Thanks John.

go to dashboard, media > add new
click upload at the top
select your pdf file and upload to your media library

go to the page or post you want it on, place your cursor where you want to insert it
click the add media button in your page/post editor
select the pdf file and add media

You may need to change the name of the file to how you want it to appear
once you have added the file, highlight the title and click on the link icon, check the box to open in new page then save/update
then update your page/post

Thanks Angela. Of course, media library for PDF like a photo image. Now the 2nd half of the question is how to link to this page that I have now saved in such a way as to download the PDF file that is shown.

Thanks,
Marty

is it a hidden page? can you tell me a little about what you are doing so can be sure to advise you correctly? you can PM me if you don't want to post publicly

If by chance Marty does not what you to post it publicly about the hidden page to contain the PDF downloadable file and how its done with wordpress, then I would like you to PM me the answer.
Thanks for your time.

I just meant he might not want to share his strategy lol
but sure
there is training on creating hidden pages as well. it's in the bootcamp courses

I never did the boot camp courses, but it seems like there could be some good info to use on our chosen niche sites.

Thanks.

np, I think they are great. and not just for PPC campaigns. You definitely should check out that training. Many applications for it :)

Hi there, I've just written a tutorial which you might find useful? Cheers, Karen

I am an Amazon affiliate. when I first came here I asked for months how to get these Amazon items to appear in basically a grid. Only Kyle even came close... but his way would have taken days to complete. we can do a hundred items in an hour now. it all has to do with the text mode. I have 3 WordPress sites under WA who have either Amazon gallery or A widget. I could even do a full a store just as simply. Look at the gallery's in www.goodcheapcomputers.com. if this is the type of display that you wish it is pretty simple let me know private message.

Check this out

Thanks for the link. I added the plugin!

Excellent. Enjoy!!

I am not sure I have ever come across a theme that permits the display of different widgets or sidebars for that matter on different pages by default. This is usually achieved by an extra bit of coding or the use of a plugin.

I personally code separate side bars to separate pages but I have heard good reports about a plugin called Display widgets

See tutorial I have found below
http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-show-or-hide-widgets-on-specific-wordpress-pages/

Dave

I think there is Restrict Widgets plugin, but better wait to see if there is more simple solution. I think my theme does not allow this. Jovo

the easiest way Marty is to add a widget wizard plugin this will allow you to place the amazon code onto a text widget and then with the plugin you can determine where you want the widget to show , which sidebar, footer bar if you have one and in which order 1 2 3 etc

Insert either a

or a

either one should give you ONE line break

However, you need to check your Theme if it allows to add widgets to ONE certain page only. If not, there are plugins that make that possible.
