Affiliate Marketing vs. Pyramid Schemes – Know the Difference

Lately, I've been seeing the same comment show up over and over again on my Facebook ads and posts:
“Isn’t this just a pyramid scheme?”
Or my personal favorite:
“This is a scam.”

I get it. There’s a lot of shady stuff out there online so I want to take a moment to clear the air, especially for anyone who’s genuinely curious about affiliate marketing and not just tossing around buzzwords.

Let’s talk about the difference between affiliate marketing and pyramid schemes and why it matters if you’re looking to build something real online.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is when you promote a product or service that you personally recommend and earn a commission when someone purchases through your link.

You're not convincing people to join anything. You're not recruiting a team. You're simply sharing helpful information and pointing people toward solutions they’re already looking for.

That’s what I do with my content, especially in the pet niche. I create blog posts, videos, and social content that help other pet owners find products they’ll love.

What Is a Pyramid Scheme?

Now on the flip side, a pyramid scheme is an illegal business model where you only make money by recruiting others into the system.

There’s usually no real product or service being sold. Its just people getting paid to bring in more people.

That’s not affiliate marketing.
That’s not Wealthy Affiliate.
And that’s definitely not what I’m doing here or products I recommend.

Here’s How You Know It’s Not a Pyramid Scheme

Now that you know what a pyramid scheme is, lets talk about some key reasons why this platform is a good place to begin your journey:
