Referral is when an external link has been clicked. If you clicked my link from my profile, that would be a referral. Clicks from major social media to your site would be social.

Direct is when someone knew who you were already and typed in the web address.

Direct clicks are typically higher for large brands, frequent users and small local businesses where their shop presence is already known, or they saw your sign somewhere and typed it directly.

Direct traffic is when someone found your site thru a google search. Referral is when they clicked thru a link from WA or Pinterest or twitter etc.

Direct traffic is not through a google search, that is organic.
Direct is when they type your domain name in.
