a domain you own is real estate and as it ages it becomes more valuable so soon as you can get your own domain you should do so

You can work on your free domain for now, but keep in mind that your free domain website isn’t really your account therefore, the site can delete it at any time and all of your hard work would be lost. Not to mention that some affiliate programs require a ,com .net .org etc
