Your Content, Quality or Quantity? - An E-mail by Brian Dean

I've received a very interesting email from Brian Dean ( from backlinko ) recently and It was a good read so I thought I'd share it with you guys.

Just to clarify, Brian Dean doesn't know who I am, I just subscribed to his email list. You may have gotten this email as well if you've subscribed !

Google Hummingbird

Google's algorithm is so amazing that it can take your keyword and find out what you actually want.

The example he used was if you searched " Where can I get a haircut in Boston? " Google would show you a list of barber shops in Boston because they know that's what you want.

How does this affect us?

When we do our keyword research, we usually look for something with low QSR right?

Let's look at these keywords:

  • Make Money Blogging - QSR 374
  • Make Money As a Blogger - QSR 287
  • how do bloggers get paid - QSR 36

Naturally we would go for "how do bloggers get paid". The problem here is that if you actually search that term you would see a lot of other posts that are targeting other keywords. Some posts that target the keyword "make money blogging" will show up when you search "how do bloggers get paid".

I tried writing a post using How do bloggers get paid but I still ranked at about 120+.

Brian Dean's point

He used his own website as an example, Backlinko has a post on Google's 200 ranking factors ( you may have heard of it ). That particular post ranks for 2900 different keywords because it is just that good.

Backlinko has 180k unique visitors per month but it only has 36 posts which is amazing. He focuses on quality, posts that are so good that Google ranks them for a lot of different keywords and this was his suggestion for us as well.

What I'm trying to say

  • Be careful when you do your keyword research.
  • Your post can rank for many keywords
  • Other posts can rank for many keywords and some of them might be your competition on SERPs even if they aren't targeting your keyword

I'd like to hear your opinion on this:

Is it better to aim for a hard keyword, in this case " make money blogging", make it amazing and have it rank for multiple keywords, maybe even a low competition one

or

Directly aim for the low competition keyword, in this case " how do bloggers get paid "?

Brian writes well and creates mega posts for his skyscraper technique. Most of his traffic is generated by his promotion of the posts not the keywords. He does generate lots of interest. He shares his posts masterfully.

His long form posts do rank well for numerous terms.

You make a good point, I forgot to factor in that he shares his posts. Could he be a master at social media marketing as well :o?

Yes, he is that.
