Perseverance is the name of the game of winning in your online business. As you mentioned before it does take some time to truly obtain significant ranking, however there are few tricks to get you faster to page 1 ranking (still not overnight but considerable faster)
1. First thing, your domain name. Your domain name HAVE TO BE as close AS POSSIBLE that you can to your NICHE main keyword.
2. Make sure your content is good with the right amount of keyword density (Not too much not too little)
3.Make sure your images have the right meta tags and descriptions.
4. Backlinks. Make sure you build your site with High quality trusted backlink (for example, Wikipedia, BBC, The Huffington Post, etc.)
5. Make sure to submit your site not Only to google but to bing as well (bing and yahoo are the same)
6. Update your content with relevant and valuable information, if possible everyday or at least every other day.
7. Create a BUZZ with PR sites, also written relevant articles on sites likeabout.com, ehow.com etc...
8. Consistency, Consistency, Consistency
Building an execution plan for your site around these points will improve your page rankings a lot faster.

**Warning** I'm assuming you already did a good job with all your site Meta Tags, site Descriptions, Title Page, <H1, H2, H3> tags which are foundational components to the success of your site.
