In order to answer the question, "When does marketing begin", we have to first look at the definition of marketing.
Marketing is not sales. It is not advertising.
My mentor and friend said marketing is "the art and science of creating in others a desire for more and more of what you have".
When do we do that? Do we only do that when we write a blog post or when we go to a networking meeting?
No way! It happens 24/7, 7 days a week and 365 days a year!

Think about the big M. You know, the happy clown hamburger guy. You constantly see the big M everywhere! I was in a seemingly remote part of Australia and I saw a McDonalds!
The golden M is shown everywhere, making impressions on your mind. Now marketing is NOT throwing up on every person you see. That is vomititus!
My marketing is running like clockwork by tweeting out via scheduled tweets and other social media and it is also done face to face every single day. How? By talking to people. Saying hi to people. You never know who you might meet.
Making friends first is an easy way to market. They usually ask you what you do and you can tell them (without throwing up!) Build in some curiosity. Then ask them questions. Make a friend, move on. Plant seeds in other people. Some grow, some do not, and some turn into referrals!
There is a great saying, "ABC" - always be closing.
I say "ABM" - always be marketing and the closing takes care of itself!
