This blog isn't self sustaining. Blah!
I love researching and posting to my blog. It is fun to learn about website creation and about the subject of my blog, education. I am encouraged to do more interesting things with my students because I know that I can write about them and publish it, but this thing needs to be self sustaining. My current job can't really support this hobby forever.
What does one do about this? Any suggestions?

How long have you been plugging away at it?
There's really nothing we or anyone else can do about it if you're still in the early stages. A lot of people come here expecting it to make money (even sustain itself) in the first several months, and leave disappointed. Blogs are a lot harder to monetize than niche affiliate marketing websites (where it's basically a storefront, with the blog usually used for reviews of items or how-tos, etc.)
You could also try the affiliate bootcamp. Most people who create a quality site and post quality content often see money come in from that a lot faster (sometimes within just a few months), but it still takes time to grow.
I see you've joined in September, so you've been at this about 3 months (Since it's still early January). My advice is to consider switching your focus to a different type of site, perhaps one of the ones I listed above (promote WA or perhaps do a niche website).
Best of luck to you.

Another option would be to hire a content writer. Just a thought.
That's a good idea - you can find content writers all over, even in content mills if you desire. Fiverr is another great place for that, as you can get a nice-sized article done for 5 bucks.
