The Miracles of Spring

It’s just a short time until the official start of spring. For some, you are still thawing out from the winter cold and others in the more temperate climates are already enjoying the new gifts of spring. Spring brings new sounds, new fragrances, new textures, new colors, new tastes and is symbolic of new life.

I live in a temperate zone, and I’m amazed by the miracles of nature that come to the forefront in spring! Already, the songs of the birds in the trees, the hummingbirds searching for those first blooms, the bees buzzing for their nectar, and the aphids attacking the rosebuds (it’s not all perfect!) are all busy totally encapsulated in the beginning of spring. The turkeys are already parading their young through the flower gardens as the coyotes intent watch. And then there’s George, the gopher snake that makes life a little easier.

I have been managing of a wedding garden for the past 12 years, and these are just some of the things that greet me each spring. We also have a koi pond in the garden. The koi’s metabolism slows down in the winter making it necessary to limit their intake of food. In spring, their metabolism increases causing them to become literally glutinous. This is when it’s the most fun to feed them. They practically jump out of the water to get the food first! They’re definitely not into sharing!

The greatest miracle I have witnessed in the gardens is the miracle of a seed. I harvested thousands of seeds from the Liberty Snapdragons that frame the pathways in the winter (yes, we have flowers year round) and planted them in my small nursery to provide a kaleidoscope of color the following winter. The seed is smaller than a pin head, and the gorgeous two to two and a half-foot tall flowers it produces is absolutely a miracle. It’s amazing to witness something so tiny having everything necessary inside it to produce such a large, colorful and visually pleasing addition to the garden.

I’ve also learned to propagate plants in the garden, another miracle. From just a small cutting, an entirely new equally healthy plant can be produced. Sometimes just a leaf can be used to create an entirely new plant.

Nature provides us with abundance. We can have, with a little effort on our part, an abundance of food for our tables, flowers for our gardens, fragrances to fill our senses, textures for soothe the sense of touch, the sounds of the birds, bees and running water to calm our busy days and so much more.

Now that spring is upon us, let’s take a moment to slow down and notice the gifts nature provides to enhance our lives.

Find pleasure in the garden!
