Don't Give In To Success Interference

Welcome family and friends. It was in 1978. I was on break on my job and I saw this book on the counter. It was a book that centered around being financially successful working smart as opposed to working hard. After fifteen minutes of reading the book my supervisor walked into the break room and said,"you're wasting your time reading a book like this. The only way you will become successful is by hard work. Finish college, get a good job, and work hard. That's what you have to do to become successful. There is no other way around it." I listened to her. My success muscles were weak. I put the book down and went back to work.

Later on in life it soon became apparent to me that working a job can only get you so far. No matter how hard I worked things happened that required me to take money out of the bank. This seemed to be a never ending cycle. If it wasn't the house needing repair, then it would be the car, and so on. The Pavlov theory had a hold on me. My credit allowed me to buy anything I wanted as long as I paid the debt on time. I became trapped in the cycle of financial dependency. Sound familiar?

I began looking for ways to supplement my income. I knew I wanted more, I knew I deserved more, and I knew I wanted to help people in a way that was a passionate experience. I joined many opportunities looking to fill that void. None of the opportunities worked for me. It took me a long time to figure out why. This is what I learned.

1. I was very vulnerable to criticism of others. Whenever I would join an opportunity people would remind me of all the opportunities I joined and never accomplished anything. They were right. I gave up so quickly.

2. I wasn't consistent at getting things done. I would start off energetic, writing down goals, doing presentations, working to build sales teams, etc. But all the no's destroyed the little motivation I had.

3. Guilt feelings would obstruct my efforts especially when I was used to activities with family and friends.

4. There was no instant gratification in the process. I could go to work and make money in a week. I could work overtime and make extra money in a week. This doesn't happen in business. It takes time.

When people tell you you can't accomplish things, it's not that they don't want you to accomplish your goals. They tell you you can't because in their hearts they don't feel they can do it either. They feel they are safeguarding you from failure. Then of course there are others who simply don't want you to get ahead in life.

A New Paradigm Shift

There are certain characteristics of successful people that makes them winners. When I identified these characteristics I realized that if I wanted to enter into that space of financial independence, I had to work on myself. That process involved the following;

1. Being consistent

2. Building confidence by accomplishing small goals that lead to bigger goals.

3. Being an independent thinker.

4. Leading by example.

5. Taking the time to identify what your passion is. Then your efforts will be fun, not work.

I am happy I found Wealthy Affiliates because this community has helped me to work on my self and find my hidden treasures under the layers of success interference. I'm well on my way now.

One more thing I would like to add. Accomplishing small goals is very powerful. It makes you feel good and builds your confidence. During this process, vulnerability dies off, your passion grows as it becomes realized, and confidence and consistency become the driving forces of our success. I hope this helps someone as all of you are helping me. Thanks.

Hi Larry. I couldnt of said this better. I too have tried several things and am hit by the negative feedback from friends and family. I always gave in.
Here at WA there is so much positive energy and encouragement. It helps so much and we want to keep pushing forward.
Wanda

Yes Wanda. There are no barriers and no ceilings here. Nothing but motivation and the energy we need to make things happen. I'm so glad we're here and it is a pleasure to meet you .

Larry,

All of this....so true!!!

Thanks for putting it out there, I can relate to much of what you have expressed here!

Gerry 👍🏻

Thanks Jerry. I'm glad you found energy in this post. It means a lot to me.

Once you get to the point of completely believing in yourself Larry, liking and loving who you are, you won't care about others opinions.
You can just smile at insults, criticisms, put downs and attempts at guilt trips.
They no longer affect you because you KNOW you CAN do it.

Yes Linda! You are spot on!!!!

Larry, this is a very informative and insightful article.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

Barbara

You are very welcome Barbara.

Larry, My pleasure!

Barbara

You might have been describing me. Sometimes we give up our dreams to keep peace in the family. Other times we give up because we really, deep down, we don't believe we can do it. The term Success Interference is very appropriate. Thanks for identifying this challenge.

Laine

Thank you Laine. You are so right.
