Alarming Credit Card Hacking!?!?

These days I'm hearing more and more about credit card hacking and fraud. It appears that hackers are finding more ways to obtain credit card information.

The first way is when you shop at any retail store where credit cards are scanned and stored for processing. Hackers break into their databases and steal the information. I find this rather hard to believe. Whenever I ask the retail outlet whether they can see our credit card information, they say NO, because it's all done by the software provided by the credit card company. So how can hackers see it? Here is a video about this.

The other credit card hacking method is what really alarmed me. Wireless is the culprit, and it appears that only certain cards (the new recent ones) apply. Here is the video exposing this type of hacking.

What does one do to protect oneself? Has anyone here had their credit card being hacked? If so, what did you do? What other ways can hackers steal credit card information? Any information you can provide will be helpful and appreciated. Thank you in advance.

RFID protection wallets exist. I own one. They are advertised on TV. I got mine at Ross.

Yes...thanks for noting this...I learned today, they are aluminum material.

For the wireless credit cards you can just slice through one of the wires in your credit card and than would be enough to destroy the circuit to where they couldn't read it.

Although, you would have to swipe the card from then on and couldn't use the proximity sensors. Also, there would be the potential for jamming in an ATM if you use your credit card to get cash back(though this is pretty small.

For protecting your credit cards and passports and id cards from wireless scanners look in those little sleeves call RFID Sleeves. Little paper folders that block transmission.

Yes...thanks, I just found this out this morning. From the time these credit cards came out, I never felt comfortable with them, because you needed no password or pin to use them. Thanks for confirming it.

Yes, this is a huge issue and the reason I started http://howtoprotectyourprivacyonline.com

I've not blogged about this yet but plan on it.

The problem with these POS systems that are being hacked is unsecure wireless networks and windows based systems.

You will see even more hacks coming soon.

Windows XP support is ending soon, hackers are gonna have a field day on people that don't upgrade.

Basically, they already know the holes in Windows and they are just waiting until Microsoft calls it over and they will go crazy on and XP they can find because they know MS Is no longer supporting it.

The fix is not that hard for corporations but they need to take the steps to secure their networks and POS systems.

Just like users need to take steps to protect themselves from hackers and spys.

That's good to know. Does this mean that retailers who are having there systems hacked are operating Windows XP? This sounds strange? I thought credit card processors have there own operating system. Yes....I can see customers who are shopping with Windows XP systems, but to hack into a retail store's database records is another story.

Yes, that's what I've heard. Maybe and OEM based system. Costs a lot of money to upgrade all the XXX stores nationwide.

Listen to Security Now, this episode talks about it

Wow....this is really revealing. I had no idea there was such a loophole. Thanks for alerting me to this. Really appreciate it.
