Our Holographic World
On April 25th and 26th, 2015 Steven Hawking appeared live, in real-time at an Austrailian opera house in Sydney. While appearing in 3D in Austraila, no matter which angle you viewed Hawking from he was comfortably seated in his office in Cambridge and it appeared he was sitting on the stage in Austrailia. When you looked there he was, on the stage in front of the audience. He was three dimensional from anywhere he was viewed I'm guessing you couldn't feel him, and that you would pass right through his body.* However, when you looked it was as if he was right there. This was made possible by Cisco systems telepresence, teleconferencing system. It is believed that holographic technology will become more popular even allowing music concerts to be held by hologram.
Hawking who is brilliant, is unable to travel due to a form of Motor Neuron Disease that is debilitating in his mobility. However, with the use of hologram technology it is possible to make it seem as if he is actually there sitting on stage, at least audibly and visually. This is incredible to take Hawkings body, and film it with cameras and then produce a three-dimensional image of him sitting on a stage on the other side of the world! In the end, I wonder if hologram technology will leave us feeling more connected or separated. You could appear to drop in on your mom, but no touching or reality sets in. Can they holographically produce the sense of feeling? Smell? Taste?
Can this make some kind of weird bi-location possible? It is doubtful, although complex this is done through technology using two cameras to add dimension and it is processed in a way that creates a whole third-dimensional object. How movable is one in a holographic world, can you go for a walk down the street and step into a bar? Probably not yet. Ever? Who can say, anything is possible if it can be imagined. I have admitted- I'm a dreamer when I began this site. The world could become a very weird place if mobile holograms become possible and gains popularity. A person could spy on a spouse, help a friend go shopping, give landscaping advice while touring the space in need of scaping. The possibilities are endless. One could even have a hologram of a big burly bodyguard sitting at their door.
Things could get weirder and we may never know where
