I have set the nameservers to WA and I am waiting for them to become active. My assumption is that I am unable to continue until they become active. Is this right?

I prefer NameCheap they do not charge you a lot more for the second year like most of the others do. You might get one for .99 at one place but next year to renew you will probably get charged any were from $30 to $50. Namecheap is the a same price every year so far for me.Also they transfer almost immediately do not have to wait long.

Did you purchase your domain name registration at 1and1? If so, making that purchase established an account there for you. You should have received a confirmation email with your user name and password. You needed to go through that account to set up your name servers to point at WA.
Or are you wanting to do hosting of some of your sites there rather than at WA?
