What to Do When You Can’t Figure out A Niche?

So, you are having a hard time figuring out a niche? No, worries! I too had a hard time figuring out a niche, as well. I was told to write down all my interest, passions, or hobbies. When I write down all my interest hobbies, or passions; my niche tends to be to board or to narrow.

My interest, hobbies, or passions are: family, children, cooking, researching, writing reviews, and reading new books. Sorry, guys I don't do much that the world may be interested in! Well, of course I have a lot of skills like sewing, saving money tricks, or fixing things around the house that would normally need a plumber or electrician to come out and fix, but these are not my interest, hobbies, or passions. Oh, and I recently started doing some home-grown veggies still nothing that I can go on and on about.

Umm…so how can I figure out what niche I should go in, if my niche’ is:

  • To board
  • To narrow

Truth is my passions, are not what the world needs help with. Makes no sense, right? I know, I have been there…and in this article, I am just going to tell you what I did to finally come up with a niche. Maybe, this could help someone else.

The Start of My Journey

When I initially came into the online space, it was to of course “Make Extra Income”, I had been researching for a while on how to stay at home and “Make Extra Income” but, had a hard time finding legit companies that would pay and at the same time would not take all my time to complete one survey or questionnaire and end up with pennies. Sigh…Sigh..

So, I researched and researched until I could not research any further and finally came across some opportunities that could work but never signed up for them. I was kind of skeptical about them, because they did not seem to be an actual job so, now I was curious on what the world and how were these people getting paid? I gave myself a break from all the overwhelming research and started right back researching again the next day. The next day I found an opportunity that I felt like would work, I joined and never spoke with my sponsor again.

Totally Confused on What I got myself into

Affiliate marketing was new to me and I had no clue what to do? Over time it dawned on me after watching numerous YouTube videos; I realized that I had just got involved with affiliate marketing. What..what is affiliate marketing? How does affiliate marketing work? What other companies can I do affiliate marketing for? Online marketing, say what? Email marketing, an auto what? And what is a sponsor? It was like trying to learn a foreign language overnight.

…I never signed up for affiliate marketing! Well, apparently, I did.

Coming to my Senses and rolling up my sleeves

Fast forward, now that I have come into the knowledge of affiliate marketing, I am very interested into how it works. I find that it keeps me going, and wanting to learn more. I work every single day trying to learn all I can, however, it does not get you or me anywhere by just learning or researching until your eyes bleed. Truth is you must implement and act on what you learn. You must get something up and running and produce content. Until then you will not get anywhere. It’s best to be uncomfortable with what you have chosen as a niche, and content produced for that niche rather, than not choosing anything at all.

After struggling with picking my niche and audience, I have discovered that my niche may have been in my face the entire time. Say, what? Yes, it is true your niche could be something you have no clue that you are even passionate about. I, myself did not know that my niche was in my face the entire time.

A Niche Can be learned or Developed

You’re asking yourself can a niche be learned or developed? Yes, I personally believe that sometimes, a niche can be learned or developed. Well, I take that back, I believe anything you are passionate about you had to learn. Not one person was born with a passion, they developed it overtime.

For example:

I had no idea that you could make money from home, especially from somewhere that was not an employer.

I had no clue what affiliate marketing or online marketing was

I had no clue that almost all the companies out there have affiliate or referral programs.

I had no clue there was such things as online businesses

So, of course without having any clue of how it works or what it was, this was not a passion, interest, or a hobby until I came into the knowledge of it. So, if you cannot come up with a niche right away, think about this:

  • What would you like to learn more about and won’t get bored learning about it?
  • Is there something that you cannot stop thinking about? And can it solve an issue for others? Not solve an issue for a few people but solve an issue for many.
  • Are you able to learn more about the topic and come up with content? Of course, writing content may not be perfect at first, it may even be a little rocky but, you will get better over time, if you enjoy learning and doing your new topic. It is always better to produce something than nothing at all. (heck, I never wrote a blog post, this is my very first blog post am I perfect at it? No! but, I do know over time I will learn how to write and produce better content. I know that I will have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable so, that I can get better. Everyone had to start somewhere)

What have Top Earner Blogger Said?

I have read from several top earner bloggers that a passion is sometimes learned and developed over time. It is not always something that you have right away. You could start off blogging about something that you think you are passionate about and find yourself changing, or deleting your site because now you find it is not your true passion. So, do not be afraid to move forward. There is no right or wrong niche. You must be willing to learn the topic, own it, crush it, dominate it, and keep writing about it.

Take me for example:

I have 8 children so, I can go on and on about children but, if you were to make me narrow it done to a niche that I had to talk about certain topics such as “cloth diapers” or “baby girl hair accessories”, I could not do it. I would get bored, run out of content, and would not want to keep talking about just “cloth diapers” or “baby girl hair accessories”. I would still want to tell my audience more than just about this topic. So, you see I am passionate about children and anything that comes along with them but, I am not passionate enough to have a certain topic in the children/parenting niche.

A niche in this case must be developed or learned

I encourage you to get as close to your passion, interest, hobbies, or something you would like to learn, as possible. Don’t waste time in overcomplicating your niche! A niche can be changed later if you find that it doesn’t work. By, then you probably will know your niche. The niche I chose I have no clue on how it really works but, I do know it has been something that I have been researching for the last three months non-stop. I know that it is something to where I need and want to learn more about. It also solves an issue that a lot of people are having and if I was online looking for help, I know there are so many others looking for that same help. And, even more importantly it is not to board or to narrow, of a niche.

I really hope this helps! Thank you for reading my very first post on WA…

What you wrote that helped me:

"It’s best to be uncomfortable with what you have chosen as a niche, and content produced for that niche rather, than not choosing anything at all."

Love your friendly and engaging writing style.
I came here to get busy trying to make money with the traditional affiliate marketing and found myself creating a self-improvement blog.
Don't know where that passion came from all of a sudden. I guess it's deep within. So that's the direction I am heading at present.
My affiliate sites are still at stall. lol
