After taking watching a training course with Jay /magistudios which can be found here. I decided to further my knowledge on SEO.

There were 2 key takeaways within this SEO training that I felt were important to know and understand and this is what I will I discuss today. First what is Google and what does it do?

Google, What does it do?

We all know that Google is a search engine and it happens to be one of the main search engines that people use.

Google's search engine consist of three things:

1. Spiders or bots - also known as Crawlers
2. Algorithms - the algorithm decides which pages (that have been saved within Googles database also known as being indexed) to show in the search results.
3. An index -a gigantic database where the HTML version of your pages and any other website pages are stored.

Googles main mission is to become the best search engine in the world. By doing this they have to make sure they are organizing the world's information and making it universally accessible.

What does Google look for?

Of course everything that Google looks for can not be stated in this short post but, here are some things that Google does look for and it may be able to help someone out.

SEO Friendly Copy:

  • Is your post or pages readable?
  • Are they original?
  • And are they find able?

The importance of Great Copy is it provides better user experience. It helps you stand out from all other results. It also gets the message across to your end users.

Good copy writing will provide:

  • A Clear message
  • Lower bounce rates
  • Better rankings
  • And the text should be well written

Having good copy writing earns trust, retains your visitors, and you may even end up with customers. Bad copy writing raises doubts, makes the visitors feel a little shaky about your site, and then it also makes them automatically assume that your product is no good, which can be a recipe for disaster.

Well written post are more likely to be shared on social media often. Try your best in writing excellent copy all the time. Ensure your sentences are short but clear. Do not get to technical with your words. Try to use transitional words such as "additionally or therefore". Finally, always make sure all the words are spelled correctly.

Tip: If you are a poor speller use a dictionary or Google the word if you must. Also do not forget to use the spell checker.

SEO Site Structure

Can your visitors navigate your site properly, easily, and comfortably?

Site structure is important because it allows Google to understand what your site is all about. Not only does it allow Google to understand what your site is about, it will also allow your visitors understand as well.

Without site structure you will just end up with a random collection of pages and post, which can be a pain. If your site navigation is a pain for you, it definitely is a pain for your users and Google.

Site Structure is important because it will provide the following:

  • Navigation, usability, and find ability.
  • Helps Google make sense of your site
  • Helps you deal with your old content
  • Using Categories will help organize your site structure.
  • Internal linking also helps users understand which post are closely related to the current post he or she is reading.

Why is this important?

If users can find the products, information, or services they are looking for they are more than likely to become customers.

Site Structure is also important to SEO. Having a solid site structure will vastly improve your chances of being ranked within the search engines.

There are 3 main reasons for this:

1. As mentioned earlier a good site structure will help Google understand what your site is about, as well as your visitors, they will have a clear understanding as well.

2. It prevents you from competing with yourself. For example: you may write a lot of post about SEO.

Maybe each blog post covers different aspects of SEO but, Google may not be able to tell which blog post is the most important so, you could potentially be competing with your own content.

Therefore it is suggested to practice internal linking so all the pages can work for you, instead of against you. <---- (This is one reason of competing against yourself, I am still pondering over but, someone may understand what it means so I decided to share)

3. A good structure site also can deal with changes easier. Overtime, your product could change, you may add new product, a product could become outdated and so on, you may need to delete post and so on.

Ideas on Site Structure:

  • Have Clear Menu Tabs
  • Catergories
  • Internal linking
  • Maybe a Cornerstone section (4 to 5 pages that you would like people to read when they first visit your site because they are the most important.) I have seen websites put tabs like Custom Work, Resources, or What we do?

Well, I hope these 2 key takeaways has or will help someone out.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post.
