Buying Up Your Personal Identity Domains. They Are Assets.

When people think of “domains”, they think of their brand for the business or we think of "keyword rich" domain names. We try to snatch up the best domains possible, ideally attempting to get a .com domain.

So regardless of the niche you enter into, you should always have your own domain name (at some point). But when it comes to investing into more of a long term portfolio of domains or treating domains for what it is, virtual real estate, very few of us ever think to seek out and purchase personally branded domain names.

The “John Doe’ and the “Jane Doe” Domain Names

The thing we need to all remember about domain names is that, if you own a domain, you are in control of that entity. Nobody else can buy it, you can sell it for a profit, and you can choose to build out a website on that domain if you wish, or you can sit on it and hold it as an asset/holding.

People rarely think of their own personal name though and often times if you are lucky, you can pick up your own personally branded .com domain name.

Ex. JohnDoe.com

It is quite valuable to own your own personal domain name and if you have small children, many folks are buying up the domain names of their children as these are assets that may come in very handy down the road.

You never know when you are going to be able to utilize it, and at the very least, you OWN your very own .com. Something that nobody will ever be able to take away from you (assuming you pay your domain dues every year).

What If Your Personally Branded Domain Isn’t Available?

Many people may have the exact same name as you, that is life and with 7 BILLION people in the world, it is likely. In fact, there are many people here at WA with the exact same name! Chances are that with some of the more common names, you will find that someone has already purchased YOUR branded domain name.

Because of this you want to seek out very close alternatives, either your full first middle last name, first middle initial last name, first two initials last name, or another variation of it.

If my name were John Adams Doe, here are some potential domains that I could purchase relating to my personal identity.

JohnAdamsDoe.com

JohnADoe.com

JADoe.com

IAmJohnDoe.com

JohnDoe.me

These are some common examples of domains that you could buy up and solidify some aspect of your personal identity. You don't have to buy up every imaginable domain, but it can be a good acquisition to have one or two of your personal identity style domains to your domain portfolio (your online real estate).

Regardless of whether or not you use your personal domains, they are personal "assets" that you are buying and for the price of a domain ($13.99 per year), a good asset to have.

Head over to the SiteDomains platform here at WA to see if your personal identity domains are available and you can purchase them directly within our state of the art domain registration platform.

Also, if you have any questions or feedback about this (I would love to hear if you were able to pick up your own personally branded domain), please leave your comments below.

This article is quite interesting but fascinating at the same time. I am thinking about the evolution of the net in the last 30+ years and where it can go in the next 30. It would make sense to own your or your direct family brand name. If anyone has done this already, what have your started doing with it. Looking for great ideas!

We have definitely come a long way, the next 30 is going to mean more people online, more people moving their purchasing online and in terms of evolution, there is going to be a lot more refined technology and automation added to the mix.

What a great idea!

You can't go wrong using your own name as a domain, if its available that is.

What a superb idea Kyle and thank you very much for the heads up.

It must have been my lucky day today, as I was able to obtain one domain using my name and also one for my niche. My niche name I wanted originally was not available during lesson1 level two, but today it was, how brill is that! I can go back and finish the lessons properly now.

Thanks again, for your help.

Jean

Would somebody mind going into a little more detail about how owning your personal domain would be an asset, even if you do not use it? Also, why would one want to buy another persons' personal domain if it does not have any previous content? Thank you in advance!
Peace
Ms. Sharon

Think of your domain as your calling card. I'm not sure but I think when you're asking about personal domain, you're thinking yourname.com right? I actually owned mine way back when but never did anything with it. I let it go and another Scott grabbed it up.

Now that I'm marketing myself, I can't get my name any more and I keep thinking I should have kept it.

That said, having your own name is not imperative. It's nice, but not necessary. If you're building niche sites, custom domains, that relate to that niche, will work just fine. The main thing to think about is, giving your site that professional look of authority. A custom domain that relates to your site content, is a big step in that direction.

That helped. Thank you very much for the quick response.

As an online marketer, you want to create a brand that sets you apart from all other competition. The more successful you become at marketing your brand, just think what an asset it would be if people that follow you could just type in your name in their browser and you pop up. That carries a lot of weight.

I also didn't grab my personal name from the beginning so I had to lock into a close facsimile of my name later, which is not the same. At the time, I thought nobody has a name like me so maybe I'll get it later. Come to find out, there are several people with the exact name as I. Go figure. I regret this.

Good question. I hope I was of help to you.

Yes, that was extremely helpful! Thank you so much.

Part of my name is Kimberly Joy and that's why I purchased the domain name www.MissKimberlyJoy.com at least 6 years ago. Although I'm married and I could have a domain start with "Mrs" I continue to use "Miss" with my preschool brand. Good luck with finding your unique domain name

Thanks for the information. I believe my name is unique, so the only value I could see would be branding, but I'm not sure of the benefits to me, given my name is one of a kind. If I was in the situation of having other people with the same name, I totally get the benefit. I definitely see the value of domain names. The name I got for my first WA affiliate blog cost me next to nothing, but within a couple of days GoDaddy showed it as being worth more than $500!
This made me wonder if there is any real value in buying domain names like people used to do or perhaps still do with car vanity plates. I'm not looking at doing that btw, just curious.

Oh wow 😯 that’s interesting! Good to know.

Thanks so much ! There are only 5 people left besides me living in my family with my last name and only one of them a young enough male to carry it on. My last name used to be 17 letters long and shortened many years ago to 6 so I know nobody else out there has my last name. Thank you for the info ! I will purchase soon, but right now I have to get back to my training! :)

Kyle, I've heard this before and someone with so unusual last name am wondering how this may apply to me as I am not sure anyone out there may want to buy any domain that has nothing to do with them. Furthermore, I wonder if any domain that is associated with my last name (unique and perhaps one in a trillion) would ever worth anything. Just curious, that's all. Indeed, this would be very crucial to those with common names such as the Smiths and Browns. Have a great day.

I already purchased my name domain. It was something I’ve always wanted to do but hesitated. To be honest, because I always thought I’d get married and my last name would change. Silly me. Once I became a premium member here at WA and saw the Insane intelligent programming platform here. I did not even hesitate to purchase my first and last given name.

Up And Beyond!

Thank you. :)

Hello, I appreciate the message I may be too late already for my first and last name! That is amazing, but more so since I considered my name a bit unusual; a search in California yielded dozens with at least my first and last name. I wondered if they were identity thieves!

Hi Kyle , Thanks for the article. I am a new premium member and quickly opened the training videos. Then I bought a domain (.com) when I reached the topic on domains..the domain name is not my personal name but something related to my favored niche..will that still be functional?

I'm not Kyle but, absolutely. Your name was an example and if you can get it, it's not a bad idea to have it in your back pocket. That said, a domain related to your niche is the best option for your site. Take one of mine...it's about DJI drones, specifically the Mavic series so I chose MavicManiacs.com.

merlynmac Thank you for the inputs..is there a possibility to change the name of a domain?

Change it, no but you can register a new one and move your site to it. Once you register a domain it's yours for the duration of the registration (usually 1 year).

how many domains are advisable ? The way I see it , meaning one can have one domain but can create mulitple sites under it? or for every niche it needs one domain ?

One per site/niche.

ok..So One domain per site/niche..it also means buying separate domain for every site/niche..This is now clear to me..thank you very much...

No problem.
