Hi Everyone, Especially Fellow Newbies, I set up (I think) my first website over the weekend. www.dewormingcat.com. I chose this website because I am totally gobsmacked by cats (totally amazed and blown away to use US vernacular). I am also a nurse, so I am interested in health care. Figured I wouldd start with something I am passionate about about : cats. So, a description of my first foray into internet marketing follows.

If you join Jaaxy (which I did), Kyle will send some training videos, which is where I learned which search terms to focus on. I looked for keywords related to cat care. The goal is to find keywords you can use so your website will show up on page one of a Google Search.

I eventually settled on health related topics and narrowed it down to simply how to deworm a cat. I wrote some copy for cat care, different kinds of deworming products, and some further cat care tips. I bought the website URL through jaaxy.com because it is easier than going to GoDaddy. (Jaaxy has an agreement with GoDaddy, so the registrar of the website URL will still be GoDaddy) and built my website their using one of the pet related templates.

I am not happy with the graphics in the template (it included picture of a dog), so later l'll figure out how to change the graphic or get a different WordPress theme. I had to wipe the whole site out once and start over. I ended up rewriting my original content, which I think is better quality.

The quality of your content really matters to the mysterious Google ranking algorithms, apparently. Needs to be original and not pasted from elsewhere. Google's algorithms can compare your website text with all the other websites out there (a program called CopyScape). Copying and pasting will not get you a good rank. Sorry people, you'll have to create high quality content (or pay someone else to).

Search result from Jaaxy:
Search term # monthly searches Est.Traffic # websites with SEO Power
this search term
"deworming cat" 4,842 823 323 83
"deworming cats" 867 148 1,180 8

The search term "deworming cat" had 4,842 monthly searches, 823 clicks per month (estimated traffic). There are only 323 other web pages out there (out of BILLIONS). The SEO ranking power is 83 (100 is best). So, I figured it has some pulling power. If I can get this website ranked well and producing, maybe l will next figure out how to flip it on flippa.com (or some other web site selling site).

The search term "deworming cats" result was really different. It's amazing what a difference an an "s" makes. Only 867 monthly searches, 148 estimated traffic/month. There are already 1,180 web pages (way more than the 400 Kyle recommends). SEO power score of 8. Way, way, way too low. The closer to 100 the better.

I wanted to monetize the site with cat deworming and other products, so it was off to Amazon to figure out how to make an Amazon store and link it to my website. Figured out how to copy the linking script from Amazon into my webpage editing site.

They make the process pretty easy, even if you don't really spend any quality time with the tutorials (which I have a love/hate relationship with). Still took a little stumbling around. Added a bunch of products I have used and can recommend, plus some others to round out the offerings.

Next, I need to figure out how to get it hosted on WA. I think I know how to change the name saver info at GoDaddy. I just have to do it.

I also need to add keywords/meta tags to my website to help Google find it.

I hope this is helpful to other who are new at getting a website up and running. I welcome your comments and evaluations of my website. I don't think has been indexed yet, so maybe it won't show up yet in Google.

P.S. : as an aside, when you find an article/content you like, you can rewrite it or have it rewritten so it doesn't get pinged by CopyScape. Go to www.fiverr.com or www.odesk.com where you can find talented people who will rewrite content, write new stuff, design a logo, etc. It takes WAY less time.

P.S.S.: Please realize I love dogs, too. And birds, and horses, and penguins. I just can't have them due to my travel schedule. Someday, l'll to tell you about my childhood dog Kodiak Captain Donnagal, my full blood Norwegian Elkhound sometime (beautiful dog, just no sense of direction. and this was supposed to be a hunting dog). Beauty over brains. And my paint horse Missy. And the chickens we kept (learning the hard way not to make them as pets, since we couldn't overwinter them here in Minnesota - you can do that math). And pet bunnies, but that was a little traumatic, too. And no, I haven't had a pet penguin, but I bet it is fun.

Well done Kwest2016 I loved your blog, post and welcome to W A you will do very well here and hope all your dreams turn into Diamonds, be blessed.

Thanks much for the encouragement. I know my blog post is pretty basic, but I can share what I know! There's always a newer newbie who could use the info.

Hey Mmoris = i don't know that URLs are free via WA...? When I went into Jaaxy and identified the key words to use, i then selected the option to get the website. The system displayed a few options and I selected the one i wanted. When I clicked on it, it took me to GoDaddy, where I had to pay for it. Maybe I missed something....

A URL is the web address of a website. The .com is the type of URL suffix. There are many URL suffix/ending such as .com (commercial), .org (non-commercial), .net, .info, .mobi, etc.

.coms were the first to be introduced when the web began. Generally, it is advised to get .com, as it is more business like.

Kellie, I am almost sure that URL's are free to you in WA as a Premium member. I suggest you check with Kyle or Carson to confirm this.

Lots of good information Kellie, I have a question though, As a newbie, I thought as a premium member of WA you can have unlimited sites, meaning unlimited .com domains.
Why did you have to buy the URL, when it is free to you as a WA Premium member. Am I not understanding what URL and .com domains are? I thought they were the same thing.

Well done, Kellie. Thank you for all that great information!

Kellie, wanted to let you know that Beverley is a great source of info as you can see in her comments. :) She has helped me a lot! Kathy

I agree!

I'll fix it so all the copy is the same size.
Good to know you can actually see the site...I wasn't sure if it was up yet.

Hopefully, it looks better now.
Thanks, Beverly!

It does - much.
I had a quick look at your site. Well done for getting it off the ground. My initial comment is you have very different font on the home page from one of the others and that makes it look quite strange. I would choose one size for all your copy (bar headings) and stick to it.

Good luck

Beverley

I did break it into paragraphs in Word, but I guess those don't transfer over. I'll go back and edit within WA. Thanks for the tip!

Hi - can I politely suggest that you just edit this blog by breaking it up into paragraphs so it's much easier for people to read. It's very difficult to follow because one sentence just runs into another and that's a shame when you obviously write well.

Beverley

Hi Beverly, I have started my web site/blog on my Domain name called grow-cook-eat.com and now I'm having trouble starting my home page and need a little help by some one. thank you.
