About Kirstenerika
Joined December 2018
I'm a new psychotherapist with a MSc in Clinical Psychology and a passion for writing. My plan is two-fold: to create a profitable niche website in one of my areas of expertise and to create a successful counselling private practice, starting with my own website/ blog to market my counseling services. I decided recently after going to numerous job interviews that if I have the choice, I don't really want to work for anyone but myself. My dream is to split my time between counselling my ideal clients and writing for my websites, all while having the freedom to travel as I please.

When I'm not writing or counselling, I'm often found ambushing dogs on the street, wandering in forests, surrendering to the power of yoga, or being a goofball.

I'm completely new when it comes to all things business-related, but am motivated to learn. Please don't hesitate to connect or shoot me a message. There's a power in the knowledge of our collective here at WA :)

great goals. Very similar to what I want to achieve. Working for the man can suck, so having total control over my time is the end goal. Best of luck with your journey. I'm pretty new to all of this, but feel free to hit me up if you want to discuss anything :-)

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Thank you. Choosing my niche is definitely where I'm feeling a bit stuck so far! You suggested thinking about problems I'd want to help people with. As an emerging therapist, I'm kind of going in the business of that, but I want to start smaller. Two ideas I had were

1. A website for natural sleep remedies similar to the example of the pre-workout supplements with a database of alternatives to medication such as supplements, therapy, alternative treatments, weighted blankets, etc. It would be a bigger project, as I would either have to review all the products myself (even though I haven't tried them all?) or have large enough traffic for customer reviews, like the pre-workout example in your video. It's definitely something I could blog at length about though and really care about, since I had quite severe insomnia for 4 years and wouldn't wish it on anyone.

2. shoes for women in large sizes (lol). I'm 6'0 and size 11 in shoes. I always struggle to find options online, which is usually my default as many stores don't carry much in person. I'm thinking if there was a way for me to have all the styles available in one place with sizes 11+ in stock (not sure how I would assure this), then other women who share my plight wouldn't have to open 20 tabs and compare prices and shipping rates on all the different sites, only to end up frustrated and shoeless. I might not even have to review all the products myself, but could create content on new styles that come in. This might be similar to the snack helmet idea in that it would basically be a place to organize all the products in one place, although not as micro. I'm really passionate about helping other women with bigger feet find elegant shoes that reflect their style, since I know how disheartening shoe shopping can be. I'm not sure if I would go with all styles of shoes, or further narrow it down, or if I went with all styles focus just on shoes that ship to Canada?

I realized this is pretty long - apologies for the ramble. I have no online marketing experience so a lot of "how would I even do that?" or "is that even a thing?" questions are coming up for me.

Any input is appreciated! Really enjoying the training so far, as it has spurred my creativity and I'm excited to put one of my ideas into action.

Your niche ideas are definitely viable directions for your niche. You need to choose one when starting out, what are you most passionate about?

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

As I expected, the topic of choosing a niche brought up some questions for me.

I'm finding it the most difficult part so far for sure, and perhaps I'm overthinking it. I'm thinking about a website for natural sleep remedies since I struggled with bad insomnia for 4 years so know quite a bit about it, and there would be a lot of opportunity for affiliate marketing if I had a database of products I reviewed, like herbal supplements, weighted blankets, etc, similar to the pre-workout website in the training video. I also have a MSc in clinical psychology, so my background is somewhat related. On the other hand, it seems like a pretty big undertaking for a first website.

Another idea I had was to have a website for non-toxic beauty products, since it's something I've become more aware of and am interested in, but then I'd probably have to buy a lot to review?

Ideally I want to start off small and simple. Any suggestions are appreciated :)

I think both are great ideas. I don't see the Natural sleep remedies niche as a huge undertaking for a first website. There's a ton of people looking for natural solutions to their insomnia, there are lots of products you could promote, and you seem to be well versed on the topic.

Now, that's not to say it's a better niche than non-toxic beauty products. They're both solid niches. The question you need to ask yourself is which one you're more passionate about and can consistently create content around.

Thanks for the feedback! Do you review products you haven't tried? Although I've tried a ton in the sleep arena, there are a lot I haven't tried. I also thought it could potentially be a collective review space (with time) like the pre-workout supplement site in the training video.

I'm thinking of leaving non-toxic beauty for now - it could also eventually fall under a larger niche of eco-friendly living?

I thought of a third option today too - a site with women's shoes in large sizes (lol). I'm size 11, and it's been a nightmare finding shoes online. I thought if I could make a website that displays shoes in sizes 11+, women in my situation wouldn't have to scour all over the internet and open 20 tabs only to come out of it shoeless. I remember you had some clothing examples on The Opportunity Scout so I would be curious to hear your thoughts.

Yes, you can review products you haven't tried. On The Opportunity Scout, I make it clear that even though I haven't tried some of the products/opportunities, I know enough to make informed observations. If you're willing to learn and give objective analysis on products, I don't see why you need to restrict yourself to only products you have tried.

On your third idea, someone here in WA (@Wendyjane) built this site: https://thetallgirlsguidetofashion.com/ and had success with it. You can draw some inspiration from it if you decide to go this direction.

Thanks for the sound advice. That makes sense. I've done countless hours of research and have probably spent $1000s over the years trying different products and services for insomnia, so that makes sense. I also have a background in research, so I'm always looking to provide an objective stance.

It's great to see other examples of people who have had success. I was thinking more of a store front, where the images of shoes in larger sizes are all displayed, categorized by style, and you can compare prices all in one place. I just like saving time and being able to make the most informed choice. Is that a thing, an affiliate store front, similar to the snack helmets?

I wouldn't do a storefront for a start. Jay was able to accomplish that because he's very proficient at keyword research. Football Snack Helmets literally had zero competition.

But as you get your hands dirty in online marketing, some of these things will become natural to you. At that point, having a storefront becomes a viable option.
