Can a niche be TOO niche?

My passion is in mathematics which led me to becoming a maths teacher and while looking for the work-life balance I decided to step away from classroom teaching and focus more on tutoring. This in turn led me to finding a way to gain more students online and wanting to provide information for my students and other who are interested in maths and those who struggle with it.

In my search to create 'the most amazing, content rich' math website, I realised that the niche "maths" was way too broad so after a lot of research and thought I settled on creating a website which provides information about Dyscalculia (aka maths dyslexia).

Feeling very happy about my niche I started researching into dyscalculia looking for resources, definitions, finding keywords. It was in this research that I realised there is not much information out there and a lot of the websites only has one page explaining the basics of dyscalculia.

I suddenly thought "my niche is TOO niche!"

I was struggling to find keywords and phrases for my website content but after more research I found companies who provides resources for dyscalculic students to help them with maths!

Then I realised that yes it may be harder to find content for my site (www.disscussingdyscalculia.com) but there is information out there and despite the lack of sites dedicated to dyscalculia there is definitely a market for my niche!

So, I just wanted to encourage those who found their niche but are struggling to find content/keywords etc...

... You have found a little gem that people are looking for but not many are writing about!

No niche is too niche!

Thanks!! As a cell and molecular biology student who is looking to pursue a doctorates degree in genetics, I was thinking of a niche in chemistry help or microbiological organisms. I am wondering how these would work for affiliate marketing though. What products or programs have you found that work on your site?

I guess the problem/challenge you face is getting the numbers required for it to be feasable, i mean if you cover x y and z areas then you need the people in those specific areas to find you, what if there are simply not enough pupils for the service you are offering. I guess the more specialist the niche the better the conversion rate but hard to get noticed and seen by the right people.

Thank you for your comment. I do agree with you, there definitely needs to be feasibility to make it worth doing. Part of my research was making sure that people are searching for my niche and in my case I although there are people searching for dyscalculia and wanting more information about it there are not many websites that cater to them.

So I guess what I am trying to say is as long as people are searching for your niche then it is feasible (despite limited/scattered information and resources). Obviously if no one is searching for your keywords then there will be no traffic.

However, I am very new to this so please correct me if I am wrong :)

when you say not many websites that cater to these people searching, can you expand, is there at least 1-2 really good quality websites, in your opinion, are these sites by individuals or companies, do you think there traffic is high, do they also work in other fields, sorry for the questions, just trying to help and get the bigger picture.

Yes there are some very good websites which does provide information and are mostly companies, either educational organisations or research papers into dyscalculia. However, there are not many websites offering both information and resources, reviews to books, how to test for dyscalculia, online programs (math games) to help a child with dyscalculia. All of this information is out there but you would have to go to perhaps 5 different websites in order to find these things.

I have also found that dyscalculia tends to be a sub page of dyslexia as dyslexia is much more well known and understood.

I hope that helps to make it clear. I welcome the questions as it makes me really think about my niche and analyse it further.

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this with me :)

Ok so from what you say, there is a need to have a website like yours, as you say going to and finding 5 different websites is not ideal, if you can create 1 very good webiste which covers all these things then you are on to a winner, especially if it is a site where you can add fresh keyword rich content on a regular basis. Stick with it, remember to start with quality over quantity, make sure everything you do is to the best of your ability. Good Luck :)
