Yesterday. October 22nd, 2014, a young corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces was part of the honor guard detail at the Canadian War Memorial in Ottawa when he was murdered by a recent convert to Islam. Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot in cold blood doing a job he was elated to have had the honor to do... The shooter's name and information was tweeted out by ISIS. Their "new converts" in countries around the world have been encouraged to take up arms against anyone in their own country, especially t

It's early - even by my standards... Lately I find myself getting up every morning at 4:30 a.m. I don't start work at 5:30 - the job I have now - most people stroll in around 9 or 10. Me - I'm there every day before 8 a.m., after I've checked my websites and done any updating that is necessary. A shower, a quick shave and a few minutes to make my lunch and I'm off - way ahead of the traffic problems. My concern here is my sleep pattern! I don't want it to get reversed. When I was in my teens my

So for anyone who wasn't aware that I came from the great White North - land of snow, snow and last winter at least - more snow, well... I am a Canadian! I coached hockey for eighteen years and enjoyed each and every season but as my kids got older I found I needed to devote more time to them and after a while I hung up my coach's whistle. But that interaction with parents and the commonality of the focus on the sport was missed. My neighbour Bob approached me in August one year and said they w

So some of you may have seen that I was undergoing a career change and becoming a financial planner. Of course if I was handling your personal finances you would want to have a well-trained, enthusiastic financial planner advising you - I know I would! Enthusiasm I have - I love helping people and 'course-correcting' them onto a path for better financial results is definitely rewarding. I wasn't aware though how difficult the knowledge part would be...and yes I'm going to add - at my age! I hav

I got to a point in my life where my health was such that I had no choice but to change what I was eating, when I was eating and how much I was eating. You see I was a severe diabetic. Yes was - having lost now 75 lbs - I no longer take any insulin or oral medication for my diabetes. It has also meant that I was able to give up high blood pressure medication as well - And I feel GREAT! Was this easy? Well a lot easier than some would think. I've lost weight before but never this amount - but in

A stigma refers to negative, unfavourable attitude about a given subject and the behaviour it produces. Stigma differs from discrimination. Discrimination is unfair treatment of a a person due to a person's identity, race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability including mental disorders. It is a form of prejudice that spreads fear, misinformation, labels i

An estimated one in five children and adolescents suffer with a mental illness! Children as young as toddlers have been diagnosed with some forms of mental illnesses. For most parents it's hard to believe that their child/children are suffering from an "invisible" disease! But there are signs to watch for and if you're a parent its imperative that you get your child the help they need at an early stage! Here's a staggering fact - 90% of adults who suffer with a mental illness showed warning sig

There is something comforting about putting on your favourite old sweatshirt or t-shirt and jeans etc. The same can be said of seeing old friends... If you were lucky enough to have the right friendships - Its almost as if there was never any time missed from the last time you saw them! We used to live in a small community where everyone knew everyone else and once or twice a summer we would have street parties or BBQ's. Along the way we became quite close with our neighbours across the street.

I find myself entering into a new challenge. I'm in my mid fifties and recently received a golden handshake and severance pay in lieu of notice. They will probably replace me with someone who is 20 years younger and 30 grand lighter in the wallet but that is the nature of the business I was in. I looked around for similar jobs and was recruited aggressively until we got to the age part. Officially companies cannot discriminate on the basis of age but it is a major factor. Instead I was approach
