Didn't realize the SEO's were blank on my site.

I didn't realize that this whole time I've been writing articles, trying to get indexed in Google, that my SEO title and descriptions were all blank through each post.
I figured this out finally yesterday and went through every article and put in an SEO title and description as well as made sure that all my relevant posts were linking to each other.
I was watching this video on SEO basics, and listened to a woman on YouTube talk about how linking each article to another was of vital importance, as well as making sure that my SEO had a title on each post. *Doh
Does this mean that this whole time, SEO hasn't been ranking my articles like I hoped they would?

That now it's like starting from scratch?
My money is running thin, and I had hoped that my site would profitable by now and I really don't want to have to work for "The Man" again in order for more income to start coming in.
I follow Spencer Mecham and he said that it's takes a minimum of 6 months for money to even be made on a website and to keep at it - obviously I'll keep at it since I know in the long run it will be my source of income.
But now, with all my posts not having those titles, was that detrimental to being ranked? I've seen emails coming saying "Congrats, Google has ranked your site", but then when I go to Jaaxy, it doesn't show as being ranked in the first so many pages.
How long has it taken you to see income? How about those that have been dedicated for a year? Have you seen success with your sites?
I've asked for site comments through the comments section, but I haven't seen any recently and I know that Google ranks you higher if you leave comments.....Should I be bothering my friends and family now to comment on my articles?
Struggling with success before money runs out. I just know if I go back to work, everything get's put on the back burner since I have GM experience and with that comes very long work hours. I just don't want to see all my hard work go poof.
Some encouragment is much appreciated today guys!
