You need to become a certified commenter, which means offering 50 comments in 30 days, with an approval rate above 80%. However, it is not guaranteed income, and sometimes you don't receive the $0.50 for every alternative comment that you might be expecting.

You can use the Ad Inserter plugin, as you do not want to edit your themes files directly as you will lose your changes when the theme updates or if you change your theme. How To Use The Ad Inserter Plugin Hope this helps.
you can use ad inserter to add hte verification code along with hte ads.txt file inf oand control your ad blocks...
so a very useful plugin
this training shows how ot add code to the head section in ad inserter and switch it on...

As a matter of interest, do you know if it's worth using Google Tags Manager for this? I've only recently discovered it and am considering putting time into learning how it works.

i know of the tag manager and think it is useful if you manage many sites, but for one maybe the easiest is to add it onto your site yourself...
i know the gtm adds the code to the head, but can slow down the site with hte head code...so test it if you go this route...
but may be worth putting time into it....

search for ad inserter...
install and activate
you will then find it under settings in your main sidebar menu...
