Not exactly sure what it is you're looking to do Justin, but if I'm getting the gist of it, you're wanting to share news about your niche, but not sure how to work around not being able to use the pics that someone else used that's located in another news site? Am I correct?
Don't ever feel you can't ask another author if you can use one of their pics, especially if you consider "curating" their content. This is looked at in both a good and bad light in various circles, though I see no problem with it and have had success with it in the past. It's actually used quite a bit in blogs and news sites, if you know what to look for.
In basic terms, you introduce a news article from another site (with credit and perhaps a bio of the author) in your own words. Then provide a link to the other site for your reader to get the "rest of the story". You've probably done this yourself more times than you could count.
The good side is that you're sharing valuable content that the author is bound to appreciate, while at the same time bringing visitors to your own site (if you can win out with Google on keywords of course).
The downside is that you're also sending people AWAY from your site if you don't do it right. If the other site if full of affiliate links, it could be a loss for you. Even so, if you allow the curated content to pop-up in another tab or window, your reader may just stick around to check out some more of your original content.
It's kind of a double-edged sword and not everyone agrees with this strategy. I don't use it that often, but I will if I don't want to try to rewrite an entire article that has already "nailed it!" Sometimes leveraging experts, with their permission, can be a win-win!
Be advised, you run the risk of creating duplicated content, which doesn't rank well, if you don't spend some time writing a well thought out introduction. You can use a few sentences or short paragraph from the other news site without it being considered plagarism, here less is more.
Finding pictures in a commercial market niche is always a hassle, unless you know where to look for them... there are a few good sources in Kyle's training on putting pictures into your blog posts.
I use a couple of royalty free plugins (Pixabay and Dreamstime Media), but I'm not sure if your niche would be well covered in those.
So if I'm way off base here, just let me know. Maybe we can try something else!

An example of what I am describing is say the new Batman vs Superman movies comes out with some production pictures that someone took with their camera, I'd like to write an article about it using those pictures but without having permission risk lawsuit. I'm seriously considering trying a different kind of niche to start with, one that is less news related and far easier to either get my own pics or finding royalty free ones.
That is unfortunately plagiarism. You also can't take pictures of a movie while it plays, or a cover of a comic book etc. as these are all copies of representations of the sole property of the original owners. I hope you were able to find some answers and insight.
