Women are living longer, healthier lives and many are rejecting retirement. Women are looking for work, moms at home and older women want to work with flexibility, have more time and be of value to others in what they do.

The 2014, second quarter statistics show that there are over 3.035 billion internet users across the world and this has grown by 741% from 2010 to 2014. These numbers are good for women looking to start an online business because more and more people are looking online for solutions for their everyday problems.

In 2011, 20.3% of US entrepreneurs were at least 50. That’s almost three times the number of entrepreneurs between the ages of 25 and 34. In 2012, the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity reported that almost a quarter of new businesses were started by people 55 and older, a spike from 14 percent in 1996.

The 12 reasons why women over 50 are the next generation of online entrepreneurs because we have:

1. increased wisdom and maturity;
2. life experience;
3. understand problems and have found solutions we can share with others;
4. helped friends understand their problems and helped then find their solutions;
5. broad and deep knowledge built up from years in the workforce;
6. built credibility and authority;
7. time management and productivity skills;
8. management , business and financial experience;
9. large professional and personal networks;
10. a high level of experience developing quality relationships;
11. even been a little bit famous;
12. and have testimonials about how great we are.

Imagine the benefits of working independently and away from the the 9-5 routine.

The Irish Longitudinal Study of Ageing have researched what builds a good quality of life in people older than 50 and concluded that it was dependent on four key issues:

a. Control ie doing what you want to;
b. Autonomy ie being free do to what you want to;
c. Self- realisation ie being able to fulfil one’s potential;
d. Pleasure ie gaining enjoyment from engaging with life.

This study also showed that family and financial constraints put pressure on people’s ability to be independent with fifty five percent of respondents indicating that they are “sometimes” or “often” prevented from doing what they want to do because of a shortage of money.

So in summary the best way to enjoy a good quality of life as you age is to have more wealth. So there are two choices and these are to earn more or spend less .

It’s never too late to get started. Even if you have a full-time job now, start thinking about what you would like to do to make extra money in retirement.
