The Road Ahead is Still Foggy
Finally
Well, after way too long I finished all of the training modules. I started out strong but then I got into my site. I'm not sure if my first site will really be the money maker I want it to.
That's okay though.
It was a learning experience and now 62,000 words and 76 articles later I am working on my second site and doing it right.
Managing Through the Virus
COVID did a number on my time management and concentration skills as I am teaching my 6 year old and blogging at the same time. My wife is not a native at English so she is teaching math during the day and after my work hours I am an English teacher once again.
I have a podcast for my first site and now I am on my way to having two podcasts and two sites. But having two jobs now has slowed me down. Still I realize how fortunate I am that I can still work from home while so many people have lost their jobs.
I know that eventually this will all pay off. My day job is SEO. Something I never even heard of before they called me for an interview. I'm writing and building webpages all day and then when I get off work I write and build my own. I work for a major university in the U.S. and at first it was really discouraging to see my paltry traffic compared to the pages that I built for the university.
I was encouraged recently when one of the departments showed a huge spurt of growth and it just so happened that I had recently SEO'd a page for that department. A little investigation showed that it went from being ranked at somewhere around 99 to right up near the first page of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
If I can do that for one of my school's pages I know I can do it for mine. So now that I am officially done with the main training packets I can focus on success.
Podcasts
Podcasts are a great way to get another avenue of traffic by the way. I am talking to people all around the world now teaching English and teaching how to teach English. Plus, it's fun. It is awkward at first but now my website name rolls off my tongue.
*The lovely pics you see are from my travels and were taken specifically for my new site. Everything there is mine except the products I, hopefully, someday, will sell.
I just want to end with a word of encouragement to those of you out there who have slowed down, stopped, or lost their way. Never, ever, give up! I would have never pursued this if I wasn't working in a field where someone pays me money to optimize their pages to drive students to their school.
SEO works and there are so many tools and resources out there besides all of the knowledgeable people on WA. Look at Jay's lessons and attend the live classes for even more information. There is something about being present for a live class that makes it more real!
This stuff works! So let's get to work.
(By the way, sorry this is so disjointed. I have taught three chapters and graded about 12 pages of lessons while explaining why something was wrong to the young one. Do not try this at home! Multi-tasking is not conducive for quality work) ^^
All the best my WA friends,
Jim
