In an emergency

Last month we had a fire at our home. It started when a curtain brushed against a candle and the fire spread very quickly. I am glad that damage was just minimal but in the few minutes of panic and in reflections after it had long gone out, I learned so much.

When I told my friend about it , she mentioned to me that she had an 'emergency box' that contained a lot of vital information that she would reach for in an emergency. So I wondered to myself " What are the top 5 things I would try to save in such an emergency?"

I know I would grab my computer and a box of important family documents to start. Some people would go for their clothes or books.......hmmm. Maybe I should get a box.

What 5 items of value would you try to save from your home ?

Good to know you are safe.
It's a great idea to have an emergency box; more important is remembering to grab it in such situations.
Thank you, Joy.

I am just getting that suggestion and I am definitely going to pack my emergency box. Thanks for your comments

There are a lot of wildfires in Colorado, the state where I live. Though only a few have been close to my home, it has made me think about what I would take.

First, my dogs. No doubt about that.

Then if there was still room (or time) for more, I would take photos first, images of past generations to share with future ones so they know the people who went through so much to ensure that one day this new generation would be here.

Next it would be some treasured mementos - my dad's favorite ring, the box of my mother's favorite recipes, the flag we were awarded from the embassy in Kabul when things were so much better there.

Important documents would be next, but almost everything in that category can be replaced with a bit of effort. Instead I'll just buy a fireproof box with a high temperature rating which can withstand a lot of heat, and leave those behind to be found later, because the truly important things will already be with me.

Jeannine you seem to have a lot of packing to do so you had better get started. Well at least you started by thinking what you need to pack. Thanks for your comments. Please keep safe.

My strongbox, Joy! Everything else is replaceable!

Much appreciated, Joy!

Wow! Glad to hear the fire was easily controlled. Time for us to get our emergency gear in order, it's the start of storm season here. Jim

Thanks. At least if we think about it before, we should be more than ready.

Sorry to hear about your sad experience
Glad that you are safe
A fire proof box containing my passport, my certificate of achievement and money
That would be my box of emergency
