My Volunteer Job
Due to my disability, I get to do volunteer work rather than paid employment. I was lucky enough to stumble upon the ideal volunteer opportunity.
I have worked in the past in the kitchen of a nursing home for two years, and I did volunteer work in a mediation office for ten years.
But then I moved to the big city, Boston, and made efforts to find volunteer jobs. The search was as frustrating as finding paid employment. Everybody says they want volunteers, but then ask for applications and references, background checks and health clearances.
So after a year of waiting for a hospital volunteer job, I stumbled upon the ideal volunteer opportunity. I walked into a nearby nursing home and asked them about volunteer opportunities. I filled out the application and made appointment to meet with the Activities Director.
