According to Matt Cutts, backlinks are still a very important ranking metric for the search results of a webpage.

Matt has stated they are less important for SEO, He also stated that there are still reasons to blog, these as just a few: exposure, branding, increased reach, community....Just don't accept any guest post for your own site just to have more content and make sure what is written is still high quality like you would want on your own site.

Thanks for sharing

I guess time will tell on this one.

My take on the video is that backlinks help. They are not important but just help. I think if you use a few backlinks that are useful, they will not do harm with your Google rankings. Debbie

Update on my comment. I asked Kyle about backlinks. He is not a fan of them at all. We all have various views about this issue. Seems with the recent Google changes they may not be welcomed by Google.

Yes, I suppose that even though backlinking has lost much of its bearing on search results ranking, quality backlinking still plays a role in it, though diminished.

What I found interesting about this recent video post was to see that Google wanted to know if they could eliminate it from the ranking metrics and discovered that it still had some value, even it is isn't as much as it used to have. Maybe this is an indication that they're working towards its complete elimination from the ranking metrics, but not until they have a better one to replace it.

This is interesting! It can be seen as both a good thing and a bad thing. On one hand, websites that worked hard for backlinks will be be fine, but websites that spam backlinks will still be there.
