When 14 Years of Work Disappears Over A Missing Country Name

Dear friends.

So many posts this weekend, even though was never planned on my ends. This means lots of good and bad events, too.

Today, I want to share something difficult that happened this week, because I know many of you in the Wealthy Affiliate community have faced your own setbacks in building online.

On August 21, 2026, Amazon KDP terminated my account. The reason given was failure to verify identity. After 14 years of publishing with KDP, my books were removed from the store, my reports closed, and my royalties held. For any author, that message is devastating. For me, it was more than a business notice. It was my life's work disappearing overnight.

Here is what actually happened.

I received alerts to verify my identity. I tried to comply immediately. I have a valid South Sudanese passport, which KDP lists as an accepted ID for my region. The problem was technical and simple. South Sudan is missing from the country dropdown menu on the KDP verification site.

I contacted support. On August 13, the team confirmed that South Sudan is a supported region. But the form still does not list it. When I try to verify, the system triggers a "Country mismatch" error because I must select Sudan or Kenya, where I am currently visiting, even though I am neither Sudanese nor Kenyan. I cannot legally verify as a citizen of a country that is not my own.

I have provided screenshots showing the missing dropdown. I have provided confirmation that I hold a South Sudanese passport. I have explained through Case #51133353 that I am willing to do manual verification. Still, the automated system closed the account.

I am sharing my appeal reply with you, so you know I am fighting this properly:

"I respect your commitment to bookstore trust, but I have been proactive in trying to comply with your alerts since they began. I request that you either reinstate my account and allow for manual verification of my South Sudanese passport, or place my books offline rather than deleting them, until the technical issue with the South Sudan dropdown menu is resolved. It is heartbreaking to lose 14+ years of work over a missing menu option."

Why am I posting this here?

First, because many of you are building publishing and affiliate businesses from places that are often missing from dropdown menus. If you are from South Sudan, from a young nation, from a remote area, you know what it means to build when systems were not designed with you in mind. Your country may be missing, but your work is not. Your readers are real. Your effort counts.

Second, because Wealthy Affiliate taught me that online business is not about one platform. For 14 years, KDP was a trusted partner. I am grateful for what it allowed me to build. But no single platform should be the only foundation for your voice. Your skills, your email list, your website, your community, and your ability to write, edit, translate, and teach are assets that no automated termination can remove. That is why I have always invested in Writing Services, Language Services, and Technology Services on my own site at johnshalom.com. Platforms may close, but skills remain.

Third, because I believe in pro-humanity and pro-government solutions. A system that removes 14 years of books because a new nation's name is missing from a list is not serving trust. Trust is built by manual review, by listening, and by fixing the list. I believe Amazon will fix this. I also believe South Sudan and other African nations must continue to demand that global tech companies include us correctly in their systems. Inclusion is not a favor. It is basic respect for citizenship.

If you are facing a similar setback today, here is what I want you to remember:

Your work still exists. My manuscripts are safe on my computers and backups. Your content is safe if you backed it up.

Your identity is not defined by a dropdown. I am South Sudanese. My passport says so. My community knows so. A missing menu option does not change that.

Your next step is still in your hands. I am now focusing on direct publishing through my website, on helping other authors self-publish, and on serving clients who need writing, editing, and publishing support. I am also continuing my research on China-Africa relations and how investment models are shifting to infrastructure that actually serves people.

I will keep you updated on the appeal. If it is reinstated, I will share what worked so others from underrepresented countries can use the same path. If it is not, I will rebuild, with you, on platforms we control.

Thank you to everyone at Wealthy Affiliate who has supported my publishing journey over the years. Your encouragement, your training, and your honest reviews kept me going through many nights.

If you are building today and feel blocked by a system that does not see you, do not quit. Document the issue, appeal with dignity, back up your work, and keep serving your readers in another way while you wait. The missing country today can be added tomorrow, but only if we keep speaking up with clarity and professionalism.

We keep building.
