10 Years at Wealthy Affiliate: What I’ve Learned Along the Way

Today I received a notification that made me stop for a moment.

I’ve now been a member of Wealthy Affiliate for 10 years.

September 2016 feels both a long time ago and strangely recent.

My son Will had just turned four. I wasn’t particularly enjoying my day job, money was tight, and I was looking for ways to improve our situation.

I believed there had to be legitimate ways to make money online.

Unfortunately, before finding Wealthy Affiliate, I also discovered some of the less legitimate ones.

My Introduction to Making Money Online

Before Wealthy Affiliate, my online experience was really just someone who scrolIed the net

I used websites. I bought things online. I searched Google.

I didn’t understand how somebody could turn the internet into an actual business.

Then I came across something called The Brit Method.

It introduced me to binary options trading and made everything look incredibly easy. There was supposedly software that would automatically trade for you and make money.

It sounded great.

Reality was very different.

The trading wasn’t easy, the software certainly didn’t produce the results it suggested, and I ended up losing money.

That experience did teach me something useful though.

There is a huge difference between building something online and being sold the dream of easy online income.

Finding Wealthy Affiliate

After that experience, I started researching other options and came across a Wealthy Affiliate review.

At the time there was a free seven-day starter membership.

I remember thinking that I didn’t really have anything to lose by trying it.

What stood out to me quite quickly was that nobody was promising instant success.

There wasn’t a magic button.

There wasn’t software that would suddenly make money for me.

The message was much simpler.

• Choose a niche.
• Build a website.
• Create useful content.
• Help people.
• Learn how traffic works.
• Build something over time.

That realism was probably one of the main reasons I upgraded.

Did I Expect to Still Be Here 10 Years Later?

Probably not.

At the beginning, I was still trying to figure out whether any of this actually worked.

Once you understand that the business model itself does work, the question changes.

Instead of asking, “Does this work?”

You start asking, “Am I doing the right things consistently enough to make it work?”

Looking back, that difference is important.

Because I definitely didn’t always get that second part right.

Where My Early Blogs Went Wrong

One of my biggest lessons from the last 10 years is that trying to speed everything up rarely speeds anything up.

I think most of us have done it at some point.

You start building a website and immediately start thinking about traffic.

• Then income.
• Then rankings.
• Then affiliate commissions.

Before you know it, you are rushing through the foundation because you are desperate to reach the end result.

Looking back, I think that was one of the biggest reasons some of my earlier blogs failed.

I thought I was following the training, but I was probably trying to skip through parts of the process.

I wanted things to happen faster.

They didn’t.

Life Changed Too

A lot has happened away from blogging during those 10 years.

I received a promotion at work, which helped relieve some of the financial pressure we were under.

That gave me more flexibility to explore different opportunities without feeling like everything had to immediately make money.

My wife and I also had a wedding business.

That became a big part of our lives for a while, and interestingly, many of the things I learned through Wealthy Affiliate helped us grow that business too.

• Websites.
• Content.
• Marketing.
• Understanding customers.
• SEO.

It all transferred across.

Eventually, we decided that closing the wedding business was the right decision for us.

It also meant that the time I had previously spent on that business could go somewhere else.

That brought me back properly to blogging.

This Time Feels Different

My current blog is probably the first time I feel like I am operating in the way I should have been all along.

I have a specific audience.

I have a defined niche.

And most importantly, I am trying to make decisions based on what will actually help the person visiting the site.

That sounds obvious.

But I don’t think it always is when you are starting.

One of the most useful things I did was mind map the entire blog with the help of AI.

It helped me see how topics connected.

It helped me narrow the audience.

It helped me understand what content belonged on the site and what didn’t.

Since doing that, I have started seeing better results from both search engines and social platforms.

Now I can refine things based on real information too.

What people search for.

Which pages they visit.

How long they stay.

What questions they have.

That feels very different from simply publishing content and hoping something works.

My Mindset Has Changed

I think one of the biggest changes over the last 10 years has actually been my mindset.

It has taken me a long time to properly separate value from money.

And even now, I don’t think that is always easy.

People join Wealthy Affiliate because they want to improve their situation.

Some want extra income.

Some want to eventually leave their job.

Some want more flexibility.

So naturally, money is always part of the equation.

The problem is that when money is tight, patience becomes very difficult.

You want the business to work quickly because you need it to work quickly.

Unfortunately, building the skills required to create a successful online business takes time.

Finding the balance between wanting the income and focusing on helping people is probably one of the hardest parts of this journey.

But I think I finally understand that balance much better than I did 10 years ago.

Why I’m Still Here

There are several reasons.

The community is a big one.

I enjoy seeing people start their journey, watching businesses grow, and learning from other members.

The platform has also changed massively during the time I have been here.

The internet changes constantly.

Google changes.

SEO changes.

Social media changes.

AI is now changing things again.

Wealthy Affiliate has continued evolving alongside those changes.

And I should give Kyle a shout out too.

Over the years he has always been willing to offer guidance or point people in the right direction when they need it.

What I Would Tell Someone Joining Today

If I could give one piece of advice to somebody starting today, it would be this.

Don’t rush the beginning.

Spend proper time choosing your niche.

Think carefully about the person you want to help.

Understand their problems.

Then build your website around helping that person.

It is very easy to choose a niche based purely on potential income.

I think that is backwards.

Choose who you want to help first.

Then look at how you can build a business around solving their problems.

I wish I had understood that properly in 2016.

What Happens Next?

I’m still building.

My main goal now is consistent traffic to my blog.

I also want the site to help new Wealthy Affiliate members who find it while researching how to build an online business.

A big part of that will be helping beginners choose the right niche and understand who their audience actually is.

I’m also starting something new this week.

YouTube.

The plan is to build blog posts and YouTube videos together rather than treating them as completely separate projects.

I have been experimenting with a new tool that lets me work from a loose script while still speaking naturally.

The tests have gone well.

Now I need to stop testing and start recording.

Hopefully, by the time the 11-year badge appears, I’ll be able to look back at a year of consistent blogging, growing traffic, and a YouTube channel that has become another important part of the business.

10 Years Later

Seeing that 10-year badge today brought back quite a few memories.

There have been websites that didn’t work.

Ideas that went nowhere.

Times when other things in life took priority.

And plenty of mistakes.

But I’m still here.

And strangely, after 10 years, I probably feel more excited about building an online business than I did at the beginning.

The difference is that now I understand what I’m actually building.

Here’s to year 11.
