Motlopi tree
Motlopi: The tree that oozes life.
Boscia albitrunca, commonly known as Motlopi in Setswana, has played a major part in the lives of Batswana.
It is often called a tree of life because of its various uses such as food for people, soil conservation and fodder for livestock during periods of famine.
The tree can also be used for medicinal and ornamental purposes. It also provides shade.
The roots of Motlopi can be pounded to make porridge and coffee; they can be eaten either raw or cooked as relish and they also have some preservative qualities, and they can be crushed into powder that is used to preserve animal fat.
Motlopi fruits are edible and are used in traditional dishes and while still green, the fruits can be crushed and mixed with milk to make a drink. The fruits can also be used to make salads.
The wood is hard, heavy and has a short fibre, hence it can be readily used; and it is used in rural areas by craftsmen to make household utensils such as spoons and dishes as well as furniture like tables and chairs.
Motlopi has a very good shade for people and animals.
I trust you have enjoyed reading about Motlopi and learned a lot from it.

Thank you.
