I just hit 1000 followers here at WA! I'm more excited about it then I would have expected.
For my first couple of months here, I was focused on the certification course and didn't pay much attention to who followed me. For my part, I would follow anyone who followed me and anyone I noticed in the top 200, but I didn't go out of my way to create a network until I read someones post (and now I can't find it) about the value of building a network here at WA.

In case your wondering how many people I needed to follow to reach 1000, the number is 3882. I think the ratio would be better, but early on I would just click on and follow a bunch of profiles, without sending any kind of personal message.
It just so happens, I hit another milestone this week, I broke into the top 500!
