SMART Goals - Key to Lean Success
31
Everyone reaching towards success needs to have goals. Otherwise, it would be difficult to assess when the desired success is actually achieved. However, those goals are not always "smart" goals, which can cause us to work harder than truly necessary to achieve the future state we are seeking.
That brings the question of what is a smart goal? Here is what the word "smart" stand for:
- S - Specific: Make sure you state or capture exactly what you want to accomplish (what, who, why, where).
- M - Measurable: There must be a way to demonstrate that what we set out to do is done. At the end of the day "that prove" should leave no doubt on everyone's mind regarding the completeness of the related tasks .
- A - Achievable: Use action verbs to capture stretch and challenging goals, but make sure it is still doable. Do not be afraid to adjust goals, you are always in control of making them more or less challenging.
- R - Realistic: Explain how the goal is aligned to your success (i.e.: this goal provides me with the opportunity to practice my writing skills).
- T -Timely: Specify a deadline or date for successful completion.
As you consider your goals for this week, make sure to pass them through the "smart" goals test. You may be able to lean your way towards success.
