Good Comment, Bad Comment

I'm still relatively new here and have some reservations about voicing an opinion but I'm going to take the plunge and give you my observations so please comment if you think I may have missed the point!

I've seen several posts about approving and rejecting comments. And I have to say that on the whole, I've found that people's comments to be fantastic. To me, I think the only time comments should be rejected is when:

1. It's simply spam or totally irrelevent

2. It's offering feedback on the website rather than the product or service.

Writing engineered comments is not always easy and people put a lot of effort into making sure they are as original as possible and are designed to open up further comment and discussion.

So it really saddens me when comments are rejected for reasons like the person commenting does not fit the profile of the intended audience. Kinda limits your readership don't you think?

Also, if you only approve the comments that say 'Thanks for the advice I'm definitely going to buy this product' your readers are going to start taking your comments rather lightly.

Finally, be sure to be a little broad minded about the types of questions being asked. If someone wants information regarding an accessory linked to your product, they are giving you the perfect opportunity to demonstrate that you are an authority and reliable source. Nearly all comments can be steered back to the action you wish your readers to take and let's not forget that more comments generally generally benefit your site.

For anybody interested or needing some help structuring comments I use the following formula:

  • Start by saying how you found the site (give it a personal twist)
  • Explain how the service/product links to you
  • Comment on one detail that you have picked up on in the blog/review
  • Ask a question linked to the product/service to help develop discussion.

There are plenty of other formulas out there so find whats best for you. Just make sure that you are rejecting comments for the right reasons and not just simply because they don't do what you expect them to do.

Hope you are all having productive days!

I approve all comments. Well, they are always just pure love this far but still, as you said- reject only if they are spam or completely irrelevant or abusing perhaps..
I agree with you, great post! Thanks !
