Too much juice

Hi everyone. So far I've been ploughing on through the course and thoroughly enjoying myself. I've been putting up posts and updating my site on an almost daily basis. However, I've just hit a wall. I applied to join an affiliate network programme and have been declined due to "content duplication". When I did a check on my site using Siteliner.com it threw up a very detailed report and said my duplicate content was around 65%. When I looked into it further, it seems that the words "juicing", "juice" and "juicer" are the culprits.

Those words are used a lot in my website - it's about juicing!! How on earth can I avoid being slammed for duplicate content.

Feeling a bit miserable and confused by it, so all comments and help are much appreciated as always.

Many thanks

Jilly

So that latest update is that my application has now been approved. Wonders will never cease!!

I'm not surprised but I'm very happy for you anything else would have been a nonsense

I know some of you wanted me to keep you updated - the affiliate programme in question has "resolved" my case. Funny that - they haven't told me the result, so I'm just going to chalk that one up to experience and move on......

that must be a relief! thanks for sharing!

I think it's a lesson in not taking things personally!

Maybe buy some credits from copyscape.com and see where the content matches are. They may be matching other website. I'm not sure if Siteliner tells you that. Repeated words should not be a cause of "duplicate content".

You can also check keyword density in rapid writer https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/article although, single words like "juicing" or "juice" should not be an issue for keyword stuffing. Have you communicated directly with the affiliate manager for the program you applied for? Try sending him/her an email.

Thanks Nathaniell - I have emailed the affiliate manager explaining that that I'd checked myself and found the offending words so hopefully that will explain everything - I guess they rely on automatic software to do the checking. Will have a look at copyscape and the WA article too. Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm not sure what to make of siteliner's duplicate content checking --

I just ran a check on an older HTML site that I built for a client years ago. Siteliner shows that I have about 90% duplicate content between the site's Home page and the index.html file. Somehow, that doesn't surprise me since index.html is the source code for the home page. Siteliner, at least for this site, is reporting duplicate content that really isn't duplicated anywhere.

It's a bit of a dark art - who knows what they based duplicate content on!

Hi Jilly, would you give us an update with how things went with your site? I'm very curious to know. It will help me out tremendously .. thank you ... I am following you now, too.

have a nice day,
meherbani

Hi Meherbani - Sure, I'll keep you updated. I emailed the affiliate network explaining the problem the word "juice" seems to be causing and asking whether this is the duplicate content they mean. Will let you know what they say when they respond.

Jilly

Thank you!!

You can always try limiting yourself to using that particular phrase and using a keyword tool to help you find more useful keywords, so that your site passes the test, the second time around :) I think a lot of people here have given you some great answers. KatKats is probably the most useful one I saw. Just a thought :)

Hi floridajf - thanks for your reply. Not sure how to describe juice other than juice! Will put my mind to it though.

Great!

Contact the network and ask a human to review your site would be my advice. I have had this before and it is a question of using a machine to do it. Explain that your content is hand written and unique. If that does not work move on and choose another there is loads in that niche

Hi katkat - thanks for the advice. I emailed them explaining what I think the problem is so hopefully they'll respond positively. Will keep you all posted. Thanks again.

Please do keep me up-to-date if that decision still stands they are not a company you want to deal with anyway

Hi Jilly - are the offending items/articles/blogs cut and pasted? I don't think a single word should be a problem.....
If you use an item which has been used anywhere else Google will find it immediately - if you want to quote another blog or item put a link to it but don't copy it - even your own!

Hi Lorna - thanks for your reply. The only copy and pasting I've done is via Word where I created them originally and then pasted them into my website. I wonder whether the posts are counted as copies as they also appear automatically on my Home page??

I think that might be it...

That's going to be a tricky one to fix. May have to contact the big man Kyle himself about that! I know that my posts go immediately onto a blog roll on my home page because that's how the template works. What a drag!

If you only posted once than that is ok - your blog roll is just a copy of your post but if you have copied anywhere else that is a problem. I'm sure you will get more help with this from other members. :-)

Thanks Lorna - hopefully it'll get sorted out - finger's crossed :)

Wow, I hadn't thought about this. I've copied product details from a vendor's site into my products page. Things like, what's included, specs, etc. Should I delete that and try to write it in my own words?

You should be ok if you copy it as screen shot otherwise I would definitely rewrite and change the wording. Or you can post a link to the other page (but you probably don't want to lose the customer)!

Thank you! I know this is going to sound dumb, but . . . how do you make a screen shot?

I'm not technical at all Jan - sorry - but on my laptop its printscreen - then paste .... but it depends on what you are using....

Thanks. I think that will work!

Hi Jan,
Was just catching up on posts and saw yours. Not sure if you sorted out your screenshot issue. I use a free program called screenhunter. Not sure if I am allowed to give specific links here at WA so you will need to Google. It's a small program I've used for years and years - still loving it. Allows you to select the area on screen you wish to create a screenshot of. In addition, if you use Windows 7, there is a snipping tool that does a similar job - again, free! Click on Windows Start Icon (large round Windows icon, far left on Task bar), then All programs, then Accessories, then Snipping Tool. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I do have a snipping tool and just didn't know how to use it! I think I'll look at screen hunter as well. Thanks again

Hi Jan,
Happy to help. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to Screenhunter, which makes taking screenshots a no brainer. I use F6 (i.e. the F6 key from the function keys on top row of keyboard). The help file explains things well.
