What is your motivation? I know what MINE is!
So...you have decided that you want to leave the rat race and work from home. Congratulations on a very big decision. But is it actually a decision or is it just a desire?
Making a decision is a FIRM choice to make it work NO MATTER WHAT! It means that you don't quit even when times get tough.
Your very first step is to ask yourself WHY you want to make this decision and what is going to get you over those humps?
What motivates you? Money? More time with your family? Want to travel more? Do you hate your boss? Are you sick and tired of commuting? Do you want to have control over your income?
A few of those are MY reasons but that doesn't necessarily apply to you. You have to know what YOUR motivations are and hold on to them tightly. That is what will keep you going when you are working on your new business before you can actually leave your current job.
Some of you may be in a unique position of having a spouse, significant other, or any other sources of income to support you while you get started fulltime. Even if money is tight, it's still quite the advantage - financially at least.
Personally, my motivation is to be able to get up and go whenever I want. I don't want to ask anybody's permission to take my kids to the doctor or take them to a theme park during the week, or take a vacation.
For example, as I'm writing this article I'm sitting in front of the "Pompeii" ride at Busch Gardens waiting for my husband and daughter to go on the rides while I sit here and write. The weather is an amazing 80° and the atmosphere is fun and relaxing.
I'm going to give you a homework assignment:
1. Make a list of your motivations to work at home. Even if it's not a big time one it's still an important one!
2. Write down THREE different places that you would like to work from.
3. IMAGINE each of those places IN DETAIL.
A. Where would it be?
B. What would the weather be like?
- Raining
- Sunny
- Overcast
- Hot
- Cold
- Snowing
- Windy
C. What would it sound like?
- Music playing and what kind?
- Wind blowing
- Waves crashing
- Birds chirping
- Children playing
- Creek
- Water running
- Rain
- Absolute quiet
- Thunder Storm
D. Who's with you?
E. Indoors or outdoors?
F. What does it smell like?
4. Create the feeling. Even if you can't actually get to the location physically close your eyes and create the atmosphere the best you can. Play the music, put a fan on you to create wind, put the AC on to create cold weather, play rain or water sounds on You Tube, Spotify or Pandora.
5. According to numerous psychological studies, the brain can't tell the difference between imagination and reality. Your brain will register it as a real experience. It's how habits are created. Pretty soon those imaginations will begin to remind you of your motivations.
FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT!

Very interesting blog Joyce.
Great concept - tricking the brain, or rather the subconscious.
Hadn't thought of that before.
I made a big move by quitting my job the other day. I just couldn't take it anymore and now I have no choice but to succeed with WA.
I've been trying many different things but now without a job I have the fire and motivation that needs me to succeed. Hopefully it all works out soon :)
