hi jen the free website is a .siterubix one or you can purchase one from here - i would advise using the free one to start with - any mistakes can be easily erased - if you buy a domain you have it for a min of a year!! you don't have to use it but you paid money for it.
start the second free site under testxx.sit...... this one is to try out ideas to prevent breaking the main one you are working on, run the same theme - you can play in here!!
i know its a lot to take in so work through it slowly, you will get there
