Google isn't all it's cracked up to be. Sneaking suspicions confirmed.
Well, I've been reflecting for some time now on my chosen niche, competition, and ranking in google. I'm starting to feel as though the new google algorithms make it extremely hard to rank, especially in broad niches. Mine being a fitness website makes the competition really tough. Unfortunately, I'm just now realizing it several months into working really hard on my website.
I don't look at this as a complete loss. I'm really happy with my website so far and will continue to work on it, but I'm refocusing on two other websites. One has a much more narrow niche and will focus more on social media engagement rather than google rankings. bye-byemummytummy.com (still working on a few things but coming along nicely)
The other I am running for a Thai friend and it will be an all Thai language website selling jewelry. The beauty market in Thailand is quite profitable. Also, Facebook is an insanely active platform in Thailand and with the training from WA It should certainly be an advantage over the other beauty sites (at least from looking at the competition). Nansbeautycrush.com She is currently working on content now.
I believe WA needs to be pushing social media engagement more so now than ever. Google is making it extremely difficult to get ranked if you are a new website. Something I wish I'd have known before signing up. If you want to make it I truly believe refocusing efforts on facebook and other social media platforms will give you the boost you need to be successful. That being said you have to remain active nearly every day to see results, post at the right times, and still produce engaging content.
This is going to be a lot more difficult than originally thought.
Here is a great read from Niel Patel. The first graphic only confirms my suspicions.
Am I the only one coming to this realization?

It is true it is a bit harder to rank but if you use the low hanging fruit keywords and are regular with your posting you can overcome that. Keep in mind that Neil Patel has his own reasons for writing what he does. He has his own money streams that often will lead you astray.
Good point on the low-hanging fruit. Although, it is hard to consistently find the quality low-competition keywords. But you are right, it can make all the difference.
I think I will run a little experiment. I will continue to use my original fitness site to produce low-hanging fruit keyword content, and the other two to focus on social media and see how they perform.
Another thing that drives me crazy is when I'm being told to produce up to 1200 words per post to help my Google rankings. Then on the other hand I'm learning people typically only read 20% of any given post and I should be more concise. We live in an ADD world and Google wants posts to be longer and longer? It's almost to the point where if you can't dedicate enough time to writing you're only treading water.
Not to mention, working full-time and trying to produce a lot of content = no life for me!
As for Niel Patel, I can totally agree. He does usually have some good points. He can also overcomplicate things for us smaller guys. I typically try to scale everything he mentions and not drive myself crazy with the details.
Hope I don't sound too negative. I'm just trying to find new ways to make it work and not kill myself.
